Retired in January 2018. $2000 per year additional RRSP room prior to 1996. $38000. Contribution in Feb 2018. Can I claim for 2017 or at all

The $38000 - $2000 per year prior to 1996, is additional RRSP room. I've contributed $38000 to an RRSP in February 2018. The rules indicate I get this extra room upon my retirement (Jan 2018). The additional RRSP room does not impact my normal contribution room. How do I deal with this using Turbo Tax?

Hello,

if your current RRSP limit allows you to claim $38000, then you can do it. Note that the $2000 additional RRSP is per year under normal circumstances so the software would read it as an over contribution. The best course of action would be to print and mail this return with a note to the CRA indicating the pre 1996 situation, then CRA can assess it properly.
