Should I count research grants from American institutions as income or as scholarships/fellowships/grants?

Hello, I am a Canadian citizen and resident, and a PhD student at a university in the United States. This past year, I was paid entirely through research grants (not a TA stipend, which are usually counted as wages). When I filed my taxes  in the US,  the IRS counted these research grants as taxable income, but I  understand that this is not the case in Canada. How should I claim income from research fellowships and scholars when filing my Canadian taxes if I counted them as income (and therefore paid taxes on them) in the US? Thanks!
