Thank you for choosing TurboTax. If you are self-employed you can claim both of these as expenses under form T2125 whereas, for employed you can claim professional fees but not the insurace paid for personal reasons.

Your professional fee may be on your T4 slip, your Relevé 1 (if you were employed in Québec) or on a receipt.

To enter your professional fees not already reported in box 44 of your T4 slip:

In online editions of TurboTax

  1. In the upper-right corner of your screen, select Find*.
  2. In the Find window, type Union and select Go.
  3. Enter your amounts and select Continue.

In CD/download editions of TurboTax

  1. In the upper-right corner of your screen, select Find*.
  2. In the Find window, type Payment Profile and select Go.
  3. Check the box Union, professional or like dues not reported on a T-Slip and select Continue.
  4. Enter your amounts and select Continue.

If, as part of the conditions of your employment, you were required to pay any of the following expenses, you may be eligible to claim other employment expenses:

  • Vehicle expenses including fuel, maintenance & repairs, and insurance.
  • Tradesperson’s tools such as power saws for forestry workers, mechanic’s tools, etc.
  • Workspace-in-the-home costs such as internet, electricity, heat, etc. if your job requires you to maintain a home office.
  • Advertising costs for commission employees.

Most employees cannot claim other employment expenses. Even if your commute to work is 2 hours each way, because you’re not required to travel as part of the job itself, you cannot claim the expense of the commute.

* If you don’t see the Find button, you may not have completed the Setting Up section on your return. Continue through the Setting Up section until the Find button appears.
