How do I enter medical expenses for dependants aged 18 or over?

SOLVEDby TurboTax145Updated January 09, 2024

To enter medical expenses for dependants aged 18 years or over, you'll first have to enter the dependant's information into TurboTax, including their net income.

Next, separate the medical expenses you paid for each dependant from medical expenses you paid for yourself, your spouse/partner, and any minor children. Medical expenses you paid for a dependant over 18 should be calculated and entered separately, otherwise the amount you can claim will be reduced by 3% of your income (instead of theirs).

  1. Select Find (the magnifying glass icon), then type Medical Expenses into the search bar
  2. Select Medical Expenses Profile from the list of populated results, then select Go
  3. At Your Medical Profile for 202x, select You paid medical expenses for a dependant (other than your spouse or children under 18 years of age), then select Continue
  4. At Medical Expense For Other Dependants, for each applicable dependant age 18 or over, in turn, add their total medical expenses paid (that aren't subject to limitation) and enter them as one receipt
  5. Enter the date of your most recent receipt for this dependant
  6. For expenses that are subject to limitation, enter them as separate receipts, specifying the type of limitation from the drop-down menu
  7. Select Continue once you've completed entering all expenses
  1. From the menu, select DEDUCTIONS & CREDITS, then Medical expenses profile
  2. On the Your medical profile step, You paid medical expenses for a dependant (other than your spouse or children under 18 years of age)
  3. If you have private medical plan, moving, van adaptation, attendant care, or nursing home costs for your dependant, select Private medical plans and other claims
  4. Select Continue
  5. At Dependant Medical Expense, enter the amount of expenses being claimed, and any extra allowable provincial portion, then select Continue
