What is the difference between NETFILE and EFILE?

NETFILE and EFILE are both methods of filing a tax return electronically.

  • CRA’s NETFILE service is available to most Canadians. With NETFILE, you prepare your return using computer software like TurboTax. TurboTax then transmits your return directly to the CRA for you.
  • CRA’s EFILE is a service available for professional tax preparers. With EFILE, an authorized EFILE provider (such as an accountant or tax preparation service) prepares your tax return and then submits it to the government on your behalf.

Learn more about NETFILE and EFILE on the CRA's NETFILE Web site at www.netfile.gc.ca.

If you are a professional tax preparer, Intuit's ProFile tax software supports EFILE. Visit https://profile.intuit.ca/professional-tax-software/index.jsp to locate the account manager closest to you or call 1 800 452-9970.
