Late filing 2019 taxes

Hi, I live overseas and know that I have an extension to file taxes because of that. I couldn't finish on time because the IRS didn't send me the ITIN for my husband until just this month (we started the process in July 2020). There's really no way I can avoid paying the TurboTax fee to file at this point for our 2019 taxes? Any help would be appreciated!

If you want to use TurboTax --no, there is no way to avoid paying.  You missed the October deadline to file for free.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2017, 2018 and 2019 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2017, 2018, or 2019 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline.  If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

At this point, you must purchase TurboTax 2019 to install on your own computer.  A reputable third-party retailer like Amazon or Best Buy may have a better price than buying the download directly from TurboTax. Also, you may have a problem even buying TurboTax unless you have a US credit card, because TurboTax is technically not licensed to be exported.  I believe that you need a US address and US credit card to buy the download. You may be able to have a friend buy a copy for you and send it to you.

Did you not send the return with the ITIN application ?  If not then ...

If you want to file for free you can fill out the forms by hand.  Here are some basic forms.....

Here is the 2019 1040 return

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf

or if you want bigger type use 1040SR for Seniors,

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s.pdf

2019 Instructions https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf

2019 EIC and Tax Tables  https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040tt.pdf

2019 Schedules 1-3

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s1.pdf

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s2.pdf

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s3.pdf

Don’t forget your state.  And you will have to print and mail your returns.  So be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

Late filing 2019 taxes

I USED TURBO TAX TO FILE 2019 TAXES IN MAY 2020.   EVERYTHING APPEARED OK FOR BOTH FED AND OHIO TAXES.    TURBO ACCEPTED FILING. BUT FED WAS REJECTED ( I DONOT KNOW WHY)   TURBO THEN PRINTED A X1040 AND A SR1040 AND INSTRUCED ME TO PRINT ALL FORMS AND SEND THEM IN TO RECEIVE OUR REFUND OF $3924.     I MAILED THEM IN ON MAY 20, 2020.   THEY HAVE NOT BEEN PROCESSED,  I AGAIN MAILED THEM IN IN NOV,2020.   THEY WERE RECEICED ON NOV 19.2020.  I SPENT APPROXIMATELY 2 HOURS ON THE PHONE WITH IRS ON 12/16/2020.   DUE TO COVID IRS HAS A REDUCED WORK FORCE. ACCORDING TO IRS THE X1040 AND SR1040 CANNOT BE PROCESSED UNTIL THE ORIGINAL 1040 IS PROCESSED (THEY WERE ALL SENT IN TOGETHER)(BOTH TIMES).  NOW IT APPEARS THAT WE ARE AT A POINT OF WHICH CAME FIRST.   CAN YOU HELP? Turbotax is not a tax preparer and does not practice before the IRS or act on your behalf.  You may try calling the taxpayer advocate.  https://www.irs.gov/taxpayer-advocate

If the IRS rejected your return, you should have printed a copy of your original return, signed it and mailed it in.  This would not have been a 1040-X amended return since you never filed an original at that point.  I don't even know how you got Turbotax to print an amended return, unless you changed other details.

If you accidentally clicked on the amendment option then look at the 1040x in your PDF file. If columns A and c are identical and there is nothing in column b then you messed up big time. Print a copy of the 1040 and all attached schedules and forms, ink sign it, and mail it in with all tax forms like w-2s and 1099s attached. They will not process the amended return you sent in twice already because they're waiting for an original return to be filed first.

Each tax year has to be filed separately using the forms for the specific tax year.  They cannot be combined in any way--do not even put them in the same envelope when you mail them.  Software for past years is available back to 2017.  Any earlier years can only be prepared on paper forms by hand--and those refunds have been forfeited now.

The current online program can only be used for a 2020 return--no other year.  And if you did not file a 2019 return you will have trouble e-filing 2020.  When it asks for your 2019 AGI try using zero.  If zero does not work then you have to print, sign and mail 2020.
