Turbotax is not letting me E file my New York State taxes but New York state does not allow you to mail it in! My federal return was E files and accepted.

No it is not illegal to mail a New York state tax return.

Same COVID form problem here, only with New York state return. So, I just e-filed Federal only. I guess we wait until state is fixed and then can e-file that one?

I transmitted my Federal, but after four phone calls and numerous attempts to remove zeros where I had added them for lines I didn't use, I gave up as they told me their software will be corrected at some point, but they could not guarantee they would have that done in time to hit the April 15th timeline.  So I printed my form, attached required documents, and snail mailed it with a cover letter explaining how TurboTax was not functioning and that I had no choice but to mail my return at THEIR direction.  I also told TurboTax that despite having used them for better than a dozen years, I may seek another firm next year due to all the wasted time and effort I had to expend because their program didn't work.

I efiled federal a few hours before trying to efile NY.  TT now won't let me and keeps telling me I must select federal return.   Customer service is rude and unhelpful and just hung up on me.  I've used TT for 20 years, this will be my last

i just found this. NY requires that you efile, but there are no penalties for individual tax payers who do not comply.

Yes. You can mail it in. However, without the IT 558 NY state form Turbo Tax had me getting $7,000 more than after I was able to use the IT 558 form. So unless you’re a CPA I wouldn’t mail it in if NYS rejected your returns when you tried to efile (as with what happened with me).

After countless hours of searching through previous posts and calling customer "support" (which is basically useless - all they do is put you on hold and search for the answer on the forums), I fixed this issue.

For me, it was deleting line 14 on my W2. The 414H retirement contribution. After deleting it, it did not change the total tax I owed to the state. Went back to file and E-file option was there.

Three lessons learned

1. Turbotax is involved in a fraudulent behavior. They INTENTIONALLY charge you for the service (E-filing) before telling you that you can't use the service and offer no clue on how to fix it. It should be clearly mentioned BEFORE the payment is processed, not after. Definitely recommend disputing the $50 state filing fee with your CC company. Would also recommend reporting it to the sate attorney general. You do it enough number of times and TT will be forced to change.

2. More than 99% of these "tax experts" are people that offer very little to no help. For example, If I have paid $50 to E-file state taxes with turbotax and now I am unable to E-file because of a glitch in the system, the solution is NOT to file via paper/snail mail. It infuriates me when instead of addressing the actual glitch, they shamelessly tell you to spend more time and money to file the state taxes via paper.  I did that last year and it was a huge pain in the neck.

3. Do NOT pay extra for TurboTax LIVE. It adds absolutely nothing in my opinion. I had it last year and it was useless. In fact, a couple of times, the "specialist" ended up giving me wrong information which wasted more time. Those "experts" are mostly not CPAs. I noticed that they were pretty much looking at forums to answer my questions as well. This year, I didn't use TT LIVE and actually had a smoother flow.

This worked for me as well, i am a little nervous about deleting a line in order to file but i'm not sure what else to do. Thank you so much for figuring this out, turbo tax experts and advice have been completely unhelpful.

The problem is I couldn’t find a single place that will allow you to just file state taxes. And since my federal taxes were already filed and accepted through TurboTax, I ended up stuck.
