Childcare expenses not being accounted for in deductions

Every time I add my child care expenses they appear saved but at the end of the deductions sections they don’t appear and so there’s no return of $$. This glitch was an issue last year too. Anyone know a way to fix this??

Are you using TurboTax CD/Download or TurboTax Online?

Are the expenses showing up on Line 21400 in the Detailed Tax Summary?

Do you have a spouse? Perhaps they are going onto your spouse's return.

No they are not showing up on line 2400, but they show up in the deductions section.

I have a spouse, he has already filed and did not claim any childcare.

they are not able to help. seems to be coding issue. tried both the app and online.

child care deduction should be included because it reduces my AFNI ( income) so i get higher child benefit and in Ontario the province gives me a refundable tax credit through the CARE tax credit.

can someone reach out to me. I paid for the deluxe version but I shouldn't have to upgrade to get this resolved. I'm losing out on lots of money.

no I am single with dependant kids.

does  not show up on detailed summary.

also somewhere else it said if I owe no taxes that the child expenses wouldn't show up. but should show up regardless.

@moin316 Have you tried deleting the receipt on the  Child Care Receipt page and re-entering it?

I am having the same issue. I have deleted and re-entered the child care expense amount and it still does not show up in the detailed deduction summary (line 214)

Thanks. I figured it out. Under depedents. I had selected "Father" as the relationship as I assumed it was my relationship to my son. Once I correctly selected "Son" everything flowed through to the summary.

I do exactly have a same issue. The record is there but nothing is shown in summary. I deleted the record but didn't help.

THIS SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME and is currently happening. I claimed my childcare the last two years and it didn't affect my return, I just thought maybe it wasn't a write off. This year when I added it, it added over $2,000 to my return, however my husband made slightly less so I took it off mine and added it to his- which it did absolutely nothing, no impact on the return and his return was absolutely abysmal for the amount he made. I just spent an hour on hold and they couldn't help me, said it is normal for it to be listed in the summary as $0 even though I had all of the receipts listed.

I absolutely do not trust this software anymore and the help center was not helpful. They told me I could pay to contact a tax professional and there was nothing else they could do. It will be the last year I file mine with them and am shopping around for someone else to do my husband's.

I had the relationship to child wrong. I had it as father and should have been son. It wasn’t intuitive. Once I fixed that it all flowed through properly

I wish that was my issue. It didn't even give an option to select relationship type it just said to choose your dependents. If that is the issue it is on their backend, I've gone through everything and there is no way for me to adjust it. When I called support told me it was normal that even though I had over $6k claimed it would show up as $0 in the summary. They told me there was nothing further they could do and it did not deduct from income nor affect my refund at all. It's beyond frustrating.

So frustrating. At the very beginning of the tax questionnaire is where it asks for relationship. That’s why it took so long to fix it. If you go to the beginning of your return is there a relationship option? Is this the first time you’re deducting child care expenses?

Thanks for your help, they are listed as "son's" and "daughter" and as a dependent, so I think it is filled out correctly. When you enter in the childcare expenses does it show for you on the summary? For me it says "$0"

Are you using TurboTax Desktop or Online? Are you completing a joint return- for your and your spouse?

Online, filing separately. Mine have been completed, I claimed $0 in deductions for childcare expenses and submitted no receipts for childcare

If you are married, you must enter yourself as married at the beginning of your return, even if you are filing separate returns. If you entered the wrong marital status on your return, you will need to start your return over from scratch.
