Claiming portion of rent but name not on lease

Can one claim his/her portion of rent if name is not on lease and the roommate claims his/ her portion?  What receipts are needed?

Yes, you can claim your amount. As per the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), in the case of rent payments shared by multiple families or individuals (roommates) living at the same address, even if only one individual was making the payments to the landlord, you would:

  • each apply as separate family units or individuals
  • each enter the portion of the rent that you paid

Are you claiming the rent for employment expenses, self-employment expenses, or for a provincial rent credit? If you are claiming a provincial rent credit, then what province are you in?

Province is Ontario

This is amount for rent paid to claim OTB.
Only one person’s name is on the lease.
