CWB applied incorrectly

When I completed our tax returns turbotax applied the Canadian worker benefit to me.  I make less than $15k per year but my spouse makes >$100k.   So we do not qualify for the CWB.  Turbotax is telling me I will get a return that is $2150 higher than what I should get.  This is a glitch that needs to be fixed.

To let TurboTax CD/Download know that you don’t wish to apply for this credit:

  1. Click the “Forms” icon in the blue icon bar to switch to Forms Mode.
  2. Click your name at the bottom left of the page so that the square turns yellow. This means that your return is selected.
  3. Click the “Forms” icon and search for “can”, then select “Canada Workers Benefit (Schedule 6)” from the list and click on the “OK” button.
  4. Select “No” next to the question “Are you eligible for the CWB?” (line 38103).
  5. Click the “Save” icon to save.
  6. Click the “EasyStep” icon in the blue icon bar to switch back to the EasyStep interview (if needed).

Dear Admin,

Schedule 6 keeps marking NO for my eligible dependent and it won’t let me go in and check YES from the form. It has yes marked the entire time until I actually get to the question where is asks if I want to apply for CWB. I click yes, and the software glitches and changes my eligible dependent to NO and takes away my CWB credit. Please HELP!

I was having same problem.  Was doing my daughters return and kept taking away refund.   She actually took it to H &R block and got the refund i had figured.  But it looks like with the last update from Turbo Tax it is now working.

To complete the CWB claim or remove it, you can directly go to the claim page by searching for "Canada Workers Benefit". You will need to answer  "No" to the claim if you want to remove it.

I hope this was helpful

The Canada Workers Benefit has Yes and with taxable income of $18,454 there is $0 credit shows on the year over year comparison-why?

I keep claiming the workers benefit CWB (schedule 6) and after I click CONTINUE  it immediately goes to the "Great news! We checked your return for accuracy...."  It's showing $0 for 2020 on year over year comparison.  It is not showing up or giving me the credit. Please help.

That particular problem is still in the newest version of Turbotax 2021 tax year.  I have checked previous years and the error was there as well, and still there even when updated.  Could you please correct this error - I use the Easy Step method of inputting our taxes and I cannot find where to correct this without having to go to the forms and doing a manual correction.  Should also mention that I have a disability, so it is saying that I don't have an eligible spouse.

I am using the TurboTax software for 2021 and unfortunately I clicked on the CWB benefit when doing my daughters taxes and it reduced her tax refund by $2500 despite them not being eligible.  I have no way to remove this even though I selected No on Schedule 6 line 38102 for both and saved at each step. I makes one or the other to be claiming it even though they do not qualify as their income is too high.  When is this going to be fixed?  Thank you!

I just did my daughter's 2022 taxes. She's a 20-year-old university student with high tuition and low income. The Easy Step module asked me if I want to apply for the CWB for her. Since she's an 'adult' with low income, I said YES. The program calculated that she was to get a refund of about $850. Weeks after filing, the CRA sent her a cheque for only $107, claiming that there had been a 'calculation error' in the application of the CWB. I redid her return and nothing changed. I am POSITIVE that any calculation error was not made by me. Now, I'm not a 'tax guy'. I just rely on the program to ask me all the relevant questions and I plug all of the correct numbers into all the right boxes. As I understand it, that's what this software is supposed to be for - non-experts. That TurboTax has failed to fix this issue is unacceptable and I may switch to a more reliable software next year.

@Leonard0108 Most full-time students are not eligible for the CWB, so the CRA likely removed it because she was not eligible.

Thanks Susan. I know that now, but that's not really my point. The point is that TurboTax should have asked me all the relevant questions, including if my daughter is a full-time student at a university, and on the basis of that the program should have simply told me that she is not eligible. Instead, the software seems to have assumed that she is eligible and factored that into her expected refund. Based on the TurboTax calculations, I went ahead and called my daughter at school to tell her that she can expect a much-needed $850 refund, only to disappoint her with bad news a couple of weeks later, when a refund of only just over $100 arrived. I understand that this is all that she is entitled to, but this kind of disappointment could easily be avoided by tweaking the software to ask the right question(s) and to make more accurate determinations of entitlement, without the user necessarily having extensive knowledge of income tax laws.

We had the same thing happen only worse. My daughter is a university student who had the CWB applied at the recommendation of turbotax as she is a low wage earner. This week she got emails from CRA to repay over $3000 due to that being applied to her 2020 and 2021 taxes. Not a scam as she called and spoke with them. Not sure how this can be rectified but something needs to be done!

How do I fix this in my daughter's return? She is a full-time student which is clearly indicated yet the software will not remove the CWB. Please tell me how to override this.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) systems would automatically remove the CWB from the return if the T2202 is clearly indicated as a full-time student. Have you been through the Review already as this should catch this discrepancy and lead you to remove it. If you have already done the Review and the CWB is still included, we believe your best option is to contact our telephone support team for further assistance, as they have the option to view your screen to help resolve the issue. This is actually a glitch in your program and needs to be addressed ASAP.

My wife and I are not eligible for the CWB, however after going through the easy step interview it applied it anyway and reduced my refund by over $600. The resources online point to going into Schedule 6 in the forms method and selecting that we're not eligible.  When I click I am not eligible, it checks yes for my wife, and vise versa.

There is no option to select no without it reverting my spouses form to yes, and vice versa. Please fix ASAP so I can file my taxes.

I have the same issue. How did you fix it?

Just a disclosure that I am also one of the TT product expert. From what I found is that in our TurboTax desktop software if you missed to answer correctly all questions pertaining to being Eligible for CWB initially including the question where it asks if you and your spouse were cohabiting on MM DD, YYYY it will by default consider you are eligible for CWB.

Now when later if you go and select that you have been living together for example the refund amount will drop since it will remove CWB as your overall household income will be higher as combined. You can verify this by going and checking under schedule 6 under forms method or go to line 45300 you should see the CWB being claimed is 0 regardless if your choice selection of Yes for CWB( that stay as is since how it was selected ) but the FACT is there is no amount or 0 amount is being claimed under CWB so you do not have to change the tick box anymore.

Still happening this year 2023 - if you use easystep it does not ask you the correct questions to complete the CWB form correctly,  you have to go into the forms and force the correct answers.  This was supposed to be EasyStep and make things easy … NOT!  Please get this corrected!!!! Previous username mitznewman and I reported this for the 2021 tax year and still not corrected.

I have the exact same issue. How many people are being duped by this? I can't turn off the claim, either through "Easy Step" (there's a misnomer if ever there was one) and Forms i.e., Schedule 6. Turn off claim for one spouse, the claim automatically goes to the other, and vice-versa. $1,600 down by "claiming" CWB. How is that even possible? Refund should increase if eligible or, stay the same if not. Back to U-File I think. And why should I now have to use a telephone (is support free - there is certainly no support from TurboTax on this forum) to attempt to solve this? There are many, many others experiencing this.
