filing a husband & wife return with net refund but large owing for one spouse and large refund for the other. Can we file now and pay later assuming they will net off?

No. The spouse that owes must pay what they owe. The spouse that is getting a refund will get their full refund regardless of whether the other spouse paid or not. They are two individual taxpayers.
