Are you using TurboTax CD/Download or TurboTax Online?

If you are preparing a brand new return, then it will ask if the person is deceased only if you chose to prepare a return for someone else.

If you are preparing a brand new return for spouses/common-law partners, unless you chose to prepare for someone else, then it will ask on the page where you will enter the name of the second person. Then it will ask who's return you want to prepare first, since they can't be prepared together.

I am trying to do a second year return for my father who passed away in December 2022.  The death penalty for was given to us for the 2023 tax year so I have to do another return for him in 2023.  When I start to do the return on line, no where does it ask me if he is deceased and it is saying I have an error because I have reported no pension income for him

Sorry for your loss. At the beginning of the return the software would have asked questions as seen in the images below. You may have to restart your return.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

Over the past 2 hours I have proven this answer wrong for the Online and App versions.

When it comes to selecting the Service you want, things get majorly screwed up.

If you select Full Service, it immediately starts requesting YOUR information not the Deceased Person's.

If you select do it yourself, it request the Deceased Person's info.

I want Full Service. I have created New, deleted Old, over and over with the same results.

HELP!

Yes, it will say "Your Information" which means the deceased person's information. You would check off on the authorization that you are the legal representative for the deceased, and you will have to upload the appropriate documents in the tab provided afterward.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

I started a new return but I'm not seeing this page. The first thing it asks me is for their marital status. I'm trying to file for my dad who passed away in 2023. I am using the downloaded desktop version of TurboTax.

If you are starting a new return it should ask you who you are filing for. Can you please confirm which TurboTax software you are using?
