Marital Status Error

Receiving this error to fix before filing:

Brandy: You have indicated that your marital status on December 31, 2021 was either married/common-law or widowed, but have not confirmed if you were living with your spouse or common-law partner on December 31, 2021 or, on the date of death.

Was your spouse or common-law partner cohabiting with you on December 31, 2021? Or, if they died, were they cohabiting with you at the time of their death?
Note: You are still considered living together if you were living apart for less than 90 consecutive days in 2021 or living apart due to reasons other than a marital breakdown.

This question doesn't make sense as I am asked this question already in the intro - asked to confirm marital status, if we have been living apart, and any changes since 2020. All answered correctly so I don't understand why this error message is coming up as the question has already been answered. And my husband has the same answers and he is not receiving this error message. When I answer it correctly by going through "fix" it cuts our return in half so I am hesitant to answer as it seems like a glitch.

I'm having the same problem - I think it's a program glitch. Hopefully they do an update to fix it?

I called this morning & they suggested that I either uninstall or reinstall the program (in case there is a corrupted file), or just file the one with the error separately. I redid it as a separate file and it went through.

I am getting this error also. Soon as I check cohabitating with spouse the amount owing goes up by $320!!  Tried calling the number above, basically useless.  They told me I would have to speak with a supervisor and one would call me back.  That was at 5:30 pm last night.  It is now 11:00 am next day. No call from supervisor. Maybe it is time to consider a new tax program after 20 years of using turbotax (quicktax).

I just came across this error, first time in my 12 years of using TurboTax. Wife and mine return went from $3900 to $1400 because I attempted to answer a question that I already answered in the beginning of the return. Is there a fix??

Uninstalled, reinstalled, updated and restarted the computer, cleared cache in browser and still get the same error.

Can you please clarify what error you are seeing? Was it a marital status and if so- what was entered and what was changed?

we have detected NETFILE errors.

You have indicated that your marital status on December 31, 2024 was either married/common-law or widowed, but have not confirmed ...  [FIX]

After clicking FIX

You have indicated that your marital status on December 31, 2024 was either married/common-law or widowed, but have not confirmed if you were living with your spouse or common-law partner on December 31, 2024 or, on the date of death.

Was your spouse or common-law partner cohabiting with you on December 31, 2024? Or, if they died, were they cohabiting with you at the time of their death?

Note: You are still considered living together if you were living apart for less than 90 consecutive days in 2024 or living apart due to reasons other than a marital breakdown.

When I answer YES and click on [CONTINUE]

My return goes from $3900 to $1400...

My partner and I have never separated or lived apart.

I have Unistalled
I have Reinstalled
I have cleared cache in browser
I have checked for updates and restarted the PC

Same result.

Also, thank you for responding.

I have already, the agent sent me a new download link. The new download link was for the same version of TurboTax I currently have. What are my options here??

Thank you for your help.

I have tried of over a dozen times to fix this issues.

I finished and finalized my wife's return but I havent completed mine.

If this problem can't be fixed,

Could I use the TurboTax Online to complete my return it could I just mail it in?

Did you transfer your 2023 tax return into your 2024 return, or was it all new from this year? If you haven't filed your spouse's return as of yet, I would start a new joint return. That way you shouldn't have that error message.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

  • I have not transferred a 2023 return to 2024. Unfortunately I did file my wife's return already, my return is the one with error. I did speak with an agent and questioned if I did TurboTax online for my return. She said as long as I do my return separate from my wife's it should work out fine. Is this correct?

I was going to mail in my return because of all this.

@GuySmiley Yes, that will work!

This error is concerning and making me lose all confidence in this software.  How unfortunate.  I'm having the same problem as identified above by others. I tried at least 4 time to do and redo my filing only to get stuck with the same error in the end.

I called the number mentioned above, opened a ticket and was told to submit the higher amount as I'm doing nothing wrong.

Now I tried to actually Netfile and I'm getting an error 'NETFILE errors prevent you from using CRA's NETFILE service.'

What is one to do in the end and who do you trust?  On the one hand you tell me to submit it, on the other hand you stop me from submitting, then again on another you guarantee the maximum refund and done right.  It's ALL EMPTY WORDS.  The only thing that seems to be working is the annoying constant badgering to upgrade and up sell me on additional products.

We appreciate your feedback. When you called in, did they share their screen with you? If yes and you are using TurboTax Desktop, did you enter the answers in easy steps or in the forms directly?

Yes, I shared my screen during the call.

I'm using the desktop application.  Before my last attempt (4th time doing this), I uninstalled and reinstalled the application, hoping that if there was a glitch maybe it gets resolved, but it didn't.

I'm using the easy steps method.

@Starting2H8TT Did you check on the S5-SUPP in Forms Mode to see if there was an incorrect information for Line 30300 or 30400? These two credits specifically ask for marital status changes.

@TurboTaxSusan

I am looking at at S5-SUPP form (for myself and my spouse) and both lines 30300 and 30400 have nothing entered to the right of box 55220 and 55290 as well as the date fields to the right. This seems correct, as my marital status didn't change, hence nothing entered.

During the review process, if I choose to fix the error, those boxes mentioned above don't change, but the final tax refund/owing does change.
