Can't carry forward my 2016 T2 file to the 2017 T2 software.

It sounds like you have done everything correct and the software would be looking for a file in a .GB6 format. If you aren't storing the file in the standard Document/My ProFile Data/T2returns folder then you would have to navigate to where the file is being stored.
