On T4E, it shows amount paid and repayment amount (0%). It doesnt show income tax paid. Is it common to be paid mat leave with no tax? Did they not take tax off payments?

My wife only received payments in the form of mat/parental leave last year. Her entire income is noted on the T4E, but it ends up being a repayment of $1,500. Since its the government paying the benefit, shouldn't they take enough tax off to not have to repay a large chunk at tax time? On the T4E it only shows total payments and repayment (0%) but doesn't show any amount for taxes paid. This seems sloppy from the government, as it would be a pretty basic calculation to take off the proper amount of tax every week. Is this correct or is it possible the T4E isn't complete?

You would need to contact Service Canada that issues the T4E slip to verify that the amounts entered are accurate.
