When I answer the "Select Supporting Person's" question, I cannot make the correct selection to the CARE tax credit (ON479-A) to have both my wife's and my income reported correctly, and thus the net family income. With each combination of check boxes, only the one net income of that person's income is entered in the (ON479-a) form, under the net family income section. This was verified by looking a our returns in PDF format.
**********************************UPDATE***********************************************
Hi, I've got this one out!
--You need to select multiple options, in response #1--
The proper thing to do (in my case, where both parents earn an income and equally support our children) was choose multiple check boxes under the response to response (1); YOU & YOUR SPOUSE / PARTNER.
After that, I once again generated the PDF copies, to verify that the ON429-A and ON429 were being properly filled out.
In the forms for the lower income earner (who is the claimant eligible for the income, and the person to which the question is being asked in the CARE page of the TurboTax wizard), the family income was now properly entered (Support person 1 + Support person 2) and thus the correct CARE credit was being calculated (ON429-A), base on our family income and our credit (ON429, Line 1) was entered (and for the correct amount).
In the forms of the higher income earner, although the family income in form ON429-a was not correctly entered (only has supporting person 1 listed), there was no credit being applied in ON429-a and the ON429 form did not exist.
After having initially chosen ONE selection (YOU) the first time around, I am now happy to move forward with checking both YOU and YOUR SPOUSE / PARTNER (Response 1) to the question.
Personally, I feel that at the root of this confusion is the statement "Select One" in following statement, prior to the responses:
To calculate the tax credit, select one:
1. Who supported ALL your eligible children? (three sub-selections)
-You
-Your spouse / partner
-Someone else
2. Or, were there different supporting persons for EACH eligible child? (one sub-selection)
-Yes, there were different supporting persons for each eligible child (now breaks out to more questions)
I, like many I'm sure, after choosing (1), only selected one sub-selection, because at the top, it says SELECT ONE.
However, clearly they meant choose ONE RESPONSE for (1) or (2), but that there could be multiple "sub-selections", as checked boxed under those responses.
I think all of this confusion could be solved by re-wording Response 1 to this:
1. Who supported ALL your eligible children (check all that apply)?
-You
-Your spouse / partner
-Someone else
Again, my situation is very straight forward, and seeing that the entries and credits are being applied as I expected in our PDF copies, I'm moving forward with both YOU and YOUR SPOUSE / PARTNER checked.
I hope this explanation helps others....as Tech support (albeit very nice and helpful), were not able to help me after two hours on the phone with how to resolve this specific issue.
This was helpful in terms of understanding the error. However I cannot drill down from ON479 to get to the form ON479-A. How do I access form ON479-A - I have tried to Search but it does not come up?
Please advise??
Thank you.
Hi, you'll need to print (to PDF) the forms and be sure to choose to print the blank one's too. That said, if you choose not to print the blank one and you don't see the form, that means is not filled out ....
1. After entering your Childcare Expenses, (and they are NOT being claimed by the higher income earner), continue
2. When you land on the "Childcare Access and Relief from Expenses (CARE) tax credit", you should have checked off YES to "Did all eligible children have the same supporting person(s)?" and ONE to "Without counting one of you, how many other supporting persons are there for all eligible children?".
The first screenshot below shows "how to check the boxes", the second shows the Provincial Tax Summary with NO CREDITS for a couple who's income exceeds $150k
When I select both YOU and Your spouse/ partner! Then continue my return drops $900 does that make sense?
When I select just YOU, it stays the same
Thanks
B
I have the same question, is such a large drop in refund amount (by around $1000) something that is expected if you select 'Your spouse/partner' along with 'You'. We are not even eligible for this tax credit (eligible for family income of under 150K), why is refund amount even adjusted?
I am having the same issue. When I click both You and my spouse as supposrting parents the amount owing goes up by over $3000. If i just leave it as the you are the supporting parent it stays the same.
Thank you as trying to fix this was frustrating as hell. If you use the forms method to do your return there seems to be no way to get this right. For next year please fix this. Anyone doing tax returns who is not an expert is likely to miss this and get a refund that needs paying back later
Same problem for me, if I identify another supporting person if drops my return. We are not even eligible as our income is over $200 000, so can I leave it as just me s the supporting person or must I include my spouse?
I wish I read this before filing my taxes incorrectly and now owe the government 5000 for the credit turbo tax calculated that I'm not eligible for due to my family income.
That's exactly what happened to me. I have to pay back 5000!!
I am glad I found this forum. That is exactly what happened to me. I just received reassessment for CRA for 2021, 2022 and 2023 and due to this TurboTax glitch, I now owe CRA more than $15,000 with almost another 3000 for interest and penalty. Is there a way to redress this by TurboTax??
To add to my last post, my wife and I filed our taxes together, with the children listed as dependents, thus supported by both of us. I had to claim the childcare expenses since I was the one with lower income. The income from both parents should have been picked up by TurboTax when calculating the Ontario CARE tax credit. It would have save so much headache for so many TurboTax users.
I have been a TurboTax user for as long as TurboTax has been in Canada and want to know if TurboTax is going to take up responsibility for this mess? I am not even sure how I am going to come up with $15K to pay CRA!
@Silas Hill We would suggest to check all the information added and make sure it is added correctly and tally your Notice of Reassessment from CRA to make sure what they have asked for.
We also suggest you to contact our product support team by phone.
They have access to tools we don't have here in Community, like screenshare, and see the issues to escalate into an investigation if needed.
Same as well. I was reassessed for 2021,2022 and 2023 for refund I should not have gotten but now also included is $2000 of interest. How do we file a complaint with turbotax regarding this error. The spouse's net income did not calculate on the ON479 form.

there is no where by using this link to submit any information. is there somewhere else to do this.
@Driven2323 There is no place to submit your information online. You would need to gather the info that is mentioned in the FAQ, and then contact our phone support team at 1-888-829-8608. They will tell you how to proceed from there, and how to submit your information & documents.
During tax season (from CRA NETFILE opening (mid-February) to the regular filing deadline (April 30), we're available 7 days a week during these hours:
During the rest of the year (May 1 to mid-February), we're available Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM ET for English and French support.
This past week, the CRA sent me an express notice of assessment stating that I was not eligible for the CARE credit as the family income was above the 150,000$. When completing my Income Tax returns for 2021 and 2022, the standard version of Turbo Tax failed to complete the family income, it just calculated just my net income. As a result of this software glitch on the part of Intuit, the CRA provided me with a refund I was not entitled to. So now, the CRA is seeking 12,000$ for over crediting and 3,000$ in interest for a total of approximately 15,000$. So this error by Turbo Tax has cast me as a defrauder by the CRA and the financial consequences on our family finances and budget are disastrous. I have been an Intuit customer for over 25 years and for that, I think that this error should be resolved by Intuit and Turbo Tax. When we purchase product such as Turbo Tax, there is an implicit guarantee that the software is not defective in doing the proper calculations so as to avoid the above gross error that leads to unfair financial burdens on the purchaser. I expect Intuit and Turbo Tax to come through and resolve this issue. I await your response.
Yes this happened to me as well, I have sent in all of my documentation to intuit for relief of arrears interest. I also did a recalculation of my taxes using a different software and this did not happen. I am generally concerned by this error. I hope we do at least get the money back for any interest owing to CRA. I hope it works out for you as well, call turbotax and they will get you the address of where you need to send your notices of reassessments. This was a total glitch in their system and needs to be resolved asap.

@Driven2323 TurboTax Online 2021 is no longer available. TurboTax Online 2022 has been updated so that the wording of the questions for the CARE credit are now more clear. The original wording caused confusion and led to people choosing the wrong options, which caused the CARE credit to either not calculate correctly or not at all.
Hi Driven2323,
Would you have the address that the documentation can be send to? My documentation is ready to be mailed but no address.
Thank you!

The best way is to phone the support number [phone number removed] and request a Turbo Case ID number, than request to talk to a representative. Once connected, ask them to forward you an email identifying what you need to send with your claim and the address. The claim has to be submitted within 30 days of the date on your CRA notice of assessment of reassessment. Good luck
