Renter Tax Credit

Hello,

Can I claim a renter tax credit on rent pay to a landlord that rented a room/basement for me but the house is not for business purpose but is residential house. ? I don't known the tax implication for the landlord in case the landlord does not it reported it as an income and if I go ahead and claim renter tax credit on it.

Thank you.

What was your province of residence for the tax year?

In some cases you might be able to claim the amount you paid in rent on your taxes (even if you were renting a residential house).  Please visit the following links to learn more about it: Can I Claim a Tax Deduction for My Rent? and B.C. renter's tax credit.
