I am doing my mothers taxes and she has a T3 capital gain in box 21.
When I enter in boxes 52 and 53 ( which total BOX 21) the amount of tax owing goes up significantly.
I was under the impression that boxes 52 and 53 were included in box 21, and should not increase taxes owed if the dollar values are present. It looks like TurboTax isn't using box 21 but the values in box 52 and 53.
There is currently an error in the software that is causing a miscalculation of box 52/53 not adding up to box 21. There is a thread that discussing this. We are waiting on a fix from Turbotax.
I am doing my taxes and the other information boxes 52 and 53 add up to the capital gains in box 21, why does it add on instead of balance out . It’s looks like it’s reported twice
Its a error in the software. They said to be patient as they are aware of the problem. LOL Its going on 3 weeks now and still not fixed.
Yes, the errors disappear when I enter box 52 and 53 in 'Total Capital Gains' instead of 'Foreign Capital Gains' but the amount owed then shoots up by over $500.
Could be right?
@rgrabo65 We are aware of this issue, and our development team is working on a resolution. Currently we don't have any ETA. Once it is resolved, we will update you in this thread. We appreciate your patience.
My wife has been using Turbo Tax for years and years, and this year has the T3 box 52 and box 53 issues with capital gains. We are trying to enter them on my form entry with 50% share of all values with my wife. My entries came out as 100% of those two boxes going into the capital gains calculation and my wife’s entries for this came out as $0.00. She has spent extra hours deleting and re-entering each T3 slip, trying different duplicate box number locations, etc, to try and determine what is wrong. She has been downloading all updates from Turbo Tax that come up on the screen when she starts up the program, but this issue can’t be resolved. This is extremely frustrating and time consuming and we need to file our taxes. Please get the software fix done asap and an update out to everyone.
Loaded the update and then tried to netfile but CRA rejected, ci5ing Error Code 95365, where figures aren't transferring properly to lines 68140 and 68150 on form T936. Have others encountered this, and what's the fix for it? I've been trying to file for weeks now.
T3 was made out to the wife. Turbo-Tax split it correctly into the 50/50 split. Husband's T1 was filed without any issue - with the boxes 21, 52 & 53 going into the proper respective areas in the T936 and Schedule 3. However, the same 50% slit in the wife's schedules (even though it was exactly the same as the husband's entries in the T936 and Schedule 3), was locked by CRA and not accepted.
Note: on April 3 I did the last available update from TurboTax.
I tried all sorts of work arounds (manually splitting the T3 per the 50/50 requirements on the T3, not entering the amounts in 21, 52 & 53) but got the same message from CRA - wife account is locked. I spent 4 hours yesterday on the phone with CRA and 11 times transferred to another agent all to no avail. In the end, the last agent took my number and hung up - never to be heard from again.
It appears that the error may be a CRA issue as the message from CRA is, "Your account is locked. If you need assistance, please contact us..." - via a useless internet info site.
CRA number [phone number removed] - with any luck other than hearing "all agents are busy", you may get to wait 1 hr. before getting an agent.
CRA number 8OO.959.828I was removed by TruboTax when my last email was posted. Maybe this posting will get through.
@DougM22 If you are using TurboTax Desktop, updates were available last week. Please make sure to update your software and try again.
Let us know if you still experiencing this issue.
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
I tried again for file my taxes and again I am getting the error that box 52 and box 53 needs to add up to box 21, which it is, but TT keeps giving me the error code to correct it. I have tried so many times, and read through the different threads here for solutions, but the error still occurs. I need to file my taxes and the fact that this has been happening for a long while and TT has not fixed the problem.
when will this finally be fixed? And if it doesn’t get fixed, how can I get my money refunded? I am unwilling to ‘fudge’ the numbers, as TT has suggested in some of the feeds, as I don’t want CRA coming to me with an audit because I did not report the correct numbers. This is a huge issue as all info submitted to CRA must be accurate.
when will this get fixed???
You may be using the wrong 52 & 53 box. Use the second 52/53 labeled "Total Capital Gains". This fixed the error warning and I was able to file.
how do I know which box 52/box 53 is the correct one to fill in? There are 2 lines for box 52 and box 53, but it doesn’t differentiate what each are.
example:
Before jun 25, 2024. After jun 24, 2024
52_______. 53________
52_______. 53________
This is how it shows on my TT program, nothing saying what the first lines are for and what the second lines are for. I entered my numbers on the top set, is this wrong?
On the desktop version of TurboTax, it shows the top line is for foreign capital gains, and the bottom for total or CDN capital gains. The last I heard, the problem should be fixed by the next update on April 8th. Fingers crossed its fixed for real this time.
Thanks for the info, BergA. Did you have to round the numbers to whole numbers, without the cents? Or did you enter the amounts in dollars and cents as indicated on the T3?
No rounding. I entered the amounts as on the T3 which added exactly to the amount in box 21
I netfiled a few weeks ago by putting the total amount of Box 21 into Box 53. But make sure you also put that same amount in Box 21. It will not calculate it 2 times. Use the first Box 53, Total Capital gains and make sure it is the same amount as Box 21. For 2024, it would have made a difference to differentiate the capital gains when they were earned (On or before June 24), but the Federal government dropped the way they were supposed to treat the Capital Gain in January/February 2025. So it doesn't matter anymore as the capital gains will be calculated in the same way as before.
Hope it works for you...
When this is going to be resolve? We paid tax software expensively but we are getting frustrated for an error that is not even our mistake but a software program
I just filed a client's return that had her CRA account locked by CRA because of the TurboTax issue with the T3s. CRA unlocked and received her 2024 PIT file, and them confirmed to me that it was a TurboTax issue, not a CRA issue. So, my many failed attempts to file were as a result of the TurboTax issue - which caused CRA to block access to her file.
Determine what the reason that prevents you from filing:
1. TurboTax, or
2. your file being blocked by CRA.
If TurboTax has indeed fixed the problem, then you have two options:
1. you can call CRA, ask them to open your account, and then file while they are on the line (have your file at the stage where you input your Access code), or
2. you can file paper docs - as noted by CRA.
