T3 - Boxes 52 and 53 - do they have to add up to box 21?

With all of us still waiting for Turbo Tax to fix entering T3's, I am wondering if anyone else has a T3 slip where boxes 52 and 53 *do not* add up to box 21?

If there has been an error on the T3 slip, I am at a loss who to contact to have it corrected.

Thanks in advance to anyone who has any suggestions!

there is nothing wrong with your T3.  I am having the same problem.  Box21 is total capital gains.  Box 52 and 53 need to add up to Box 21.  Its a error in the software where box21 is not being transferred to the corresponding line 68140.

There is another post on this but no fix from Intuit.

I have a filled in box 21 but nothing in the footnotes about box 52 and 53.  I don't know if this is a t3 issue, a cra issue or a TurboTax issue.  All I know is I have a t3 issue on a tax law that didn't go through so this should be a non issue.  Make 52 + 53 = 21!!! And ignore period 1 and 2

Can you please confirm if you imported your T3 with our AFR? If yes, can you please go on your CRA My Account and verify your T3 to make sure that each box on your T3 was entered when imported?

I did not download the T3.  All entries done manually.

Box 21 on the T3 for 2024 is just the sum of the amounts in boxes 52 & 53. You need to put whatever is in Box 21 in either 52 or 53 for it to transfer to Schedule 3. It doesn't matter which as they are both taxed at the 50% rate, but for some reason using just Box 53 seems to work better for some people.

if you put the whole amount in box 53, it is still increasing the capital gains amount that they are claiming on their returns.  Can we bypass entering anything in box 52 or 53?

I have downloaded the update and continue to have an error message.  My 52 and 53 do add up to 21, i have quadruple checked,  but software issue continues.

The tax deadline is quickly approaching.....

I manually typed 0.00 into box 52 and the error seemed to have gone away.

I have not yet netfiled the return. Still waiting on some missing information to complete it

I had the same problem with boxes 21. 52 and 53 preventing net filing and tried all the suggestions on here and a few more of my own.  I solved my problem by going to the forms section of TurboTax, selecting the T-slips tab and going to T-3 slips.  Boxes 52 and 53 contained no entry despite the info having been inputted in Easy Step.  I put the required numbers into the spaces manually and the problem was solved and I was able to netfile my return.  Obvious the problem is a software problem which Turbo Tax should have fixed weeks ago.

you need to use the second boxes 52 and 53 not the first 52 or 53 then it will be ok IE put your numbers in the second boxes

I have tried the fix for Error code 95365, where you move the T3 box 52 into box 53 adding what ever is already in 53 if any, as well as rounding to the nearest dollar amounts, making certain box 21 and 53 are equal. It does not fix the situation of box 21 not populating into form T936 on the proper line 68140.  I am not computer savvy but it certainly does not make any sense that this is an issue with CRA, as it happens before the TT software would be having a conversation with the CRA software...unless stays on the line and does all the populations and calculations once you hit the "finished with T#".  It would be smart if TT would explain a little bit of how the CRA's at fault for a population error.  Not to give up secrets, but it makes no sense at this point to us unintelligent lowly TT program users.

I fail to see how this problem can be CRA's fault.    In my opinion the source of the confusion (problem) lies in the fact that the Easy Step T3 entry section has two Box 52's both labeled differently (same with Box 53) i.e. Foreign Capital Gains and Total Capital gains. The forms entry T3 input has only one Box 52 and one Box 53, both of which are for Total Capital Gains since Box 21 does not differentiate between Total and Foreign.  The problem is the fact that only one Box 52 communicates with the T3 entry into the tax preparation.  The same with Box 53.  If you use Easy Step then you have to use the second Box 52 and Box 53 (as Wes1 points out).  Surely this is a problem in the software.

My T3 has an entry in Box 21 but nothing for Boxes 52 or 53.  I kept getting an error message that Boxes 52 and 53 needed to be entered even though my T3 does not show these boxes.  I finally entered the same amount in Box 53 from Box 21 and my Turbo Tax error message disappeared.  I was able to Net File with no issues.

Hope this helps someone else.

Can turbotax not provide a fix to copy the numbers from the T3 over to Line 68140? on the T936 form.

How is this a CRA issue if you guys aren't copying a simple number over.  When we double click into line 68140 it goes directly to the T3.  Why can't you just copy the number over?

it worked every prior year.

@rgrabo65 For all T3 slips in your return: - Remove the amount from Box 52, if applicable (leave it blank) - Enter the sum of Box 52 + Box 53 in Box 53 - Ensure Box 53 equals the amount in Box 21 If the error persists, try rounding the box amounts (21 and 53) to the nearest dollar and submit via NETFILE once more.

A new update was released today, so make sure the software is up to date.
