T4 - Box 17 and Box 17A Error

Hi,

I am getting the following error when entering a T4.

* When you enter an amount for extra CPP/QPP contributions in T4 boxes 16A or 17A, you also need to enter an amount for CPP/QPP contributions in the corresponding boxes 16 or 17. You can't enter an amount for CPP contributions or QPP contributions on the same T4, so make sure to only claim one type.*

My issued T4 only has an amount for box 17A and has no amount for box 17. Because of this, I cannot enter any amount for box 17, as it should be zero. The T4 was for short employment at the end of the year for Quebec, after already reaching the CPP/QPP maximums in BC. TurboTax, however, does not let me proceed with what is indicated in my issued T4.

Can you please advise of rectification methods as my taxes cannot be filed since TurboTax flags this error and does not let me proceed.

Thank you.

Please contact your employer to confirm the amount that should be in box 17. They might have to reissue a new T4 slip.

Thanks for choosing TurboTax.

Hi. Yes, I have verified that the T4 is issued correctly.  The issuer of the T4 is the Government of Canada themselves.

Please rectify.  I have chosen to purchase Turbotax for many years despite there being free tax applications to use so far as it is user friendly, so far...

Your application is erroneously adding blocks in the T4 slip entries and flagging them as errors. Please correct. If not, please provide a refund as your application is erroneously flagging this error and not allowing me to proceed in the software. I have contacted the Government of Canada and they have indicated there is no error in the T4. It is TurboTax with the error.

Do you have anything reported in Box 10? Province of employment?

Yes. There definitely is. In box 10, QC is indicated. The Government of Canada issued this T4. I have even contacted them to review and confirm. I've also contacted CRA to review and confirm.  Both have indicated there are no errors with the issued T4. I have used TurboTax for over 10 years. I am very familiar with how to enter these items and enter them fully per the issued T4.

This is clearly an error on TurboTax's side with erroneously adding blocks to the software. Please correct as soon as possible.

If box 10 indicates a province other than Quebec make sure that both boxes 17 and 17A are empty.

That does not apply in this case, as I've indicated already that box 10 indicates QC which is Quebec.

Box 17 and 17A reference QPP which apply to Quebec (QC). It states QPP in boxes 17 and 17A, so of course it is for Quebec only...because it is QPP....

Your response does not help in any way. The Government of Canada and the Canada Revenue Agency have reviewed and confirmed that my T4 (for QC), which has $0 in Box 17 and an amount in Box 17A is absolutely correct.  As I have mentioned, the T4 was for employment near the end of the year, when the CPP/QPP limits which would have been in Box 17 was already maxed out. Because it was already maxed out by the time this employment took place, there is $0 for Box17 for this T4.

Your software which I purchased, to file my taxes, is erroneously applying a block and flagging an error when I enter the T4 as it was correctly issued. This is preventing me from entering and saving the tax return and the T4. Your application requires an adjustment.

Please fix asap.

Hi. Thank you for recognizing the error in the TurboTax software.

It's been a week since your last message. I just downloaded the most recent changes and the error still is not fixed.

Can you provide an ETA as I have delayed filing my taxes for a couple weeks because of this error. If there is no ETA, I will just proceed with a different tax software and will not rely on Turbotax going forward any longer.

Thanks.

This error should be fixed with the new update. Make sure that the software is updated. Always make sure that anti-virus, spyware, VPN, and firewall are deactivated. We also suggest clearing cookies and cache. If the issue persists, we suggest contacting our product support team by phone.

Hi. I've contacted product support and the issue is in escalation. The agent and supervisor said the issue is not fixed.  TurboTax Aniqua - can you please advise where you received information that the issue is fixed.

I'm still on the call as I write this message.

I am still on the phone with product support. The supervisor has now advised that I input an erroneous dollar amount into box 17 because the Turbotax software is not fixed. And is advising me to file my taxes by inputting the exact same amount thay I have in Box 17A, into Box 17....even though box 17, as listed on my Government issued T4, is $0.

That sounds very odd.

The developers have not corrected the software. Please fix.

@ManyTaxQuestions We already explained and answered you in another thread.

Box 16/17 on T4 is Employee's CPP contributions.

Box 16A/17A is Employees’ second CPP contributions.

This is not a software issue, because if you have a 2nd contribution (box 16A/17A), you should logically have a 1st contribution (box 16/17). Technically, both amount should be on the same T4.

If the last version of your T4 on your CRA My Account is not with box 16/17 and box 16A/17A on the same slip, we suggest you to contact CRA to see if you can combine both T4s together to have only 1 but with all the amount reflecting your 2024 year.

Here is the link to contact CRA

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

@TurboTaxVeronique I assume you did not read the thread fully. If you did, you would have read that "The T4 was for short employment at the end of the year for Quebec after already reaching the CPP/QPP maximums in BC."

To confirm, you are recommending that I call CRA to ask them if I can combine a T4 from QC with A T4 from the rest of Canada (BC)?

Your recommendation does not make sense as there would definitely be an error if all of boxes 16, 16A, 17 and 17A are completed on the same T4.

(SIDENOTE - although your recommendation does not make sense I went ahead and tried it in the software and indeed, the big red flagged error indicates "You can't enter an amount for  CPP and QPP contributions in the same T4". ) This flag does make sense. The flag in my original question does not.

The software has an error.

Similar to yesterday's software update issue. When the software has bugs, TurboTax recommendations are to make the paying customer uninstall and reinstall rather than to fix the bugs in the software itself, and for many many customers at that.

This is not a reliable company and has completely lost my loyalty of being a close to 20 year customer.

Also, @TurboTaxVeronique I did not ask a question related to this in another thread. So you did not answer me.

A different user asked a question about their same error with their box 16 and Box16A. I commented in that thread that I had a similar issue but with Box 17 and Box 17A. Afterwards, you brushed that user off as well. And told them to contact CRA.

Please do not paint a false picture of me asking the same question in multiple threads @TurboTaxVeronique .

To @ManyTaxQuestions @TurboTaxAniqua

We are having a very similar issue. When filing our taxes, my wife was met with the same error. She also works for the Canadian Government. She recently switched departments and received a T4 for one department in Ontario and another T4 for a department in Quebec.

Her second T4 has QC in Box 10 and only has a number in Box 17A with Box 17 being blank. She is also now unable to complete her tax return due to this error. Please help!

@Capsule Has your wife contacted the Pay Centre? I have and they told me there is nothing incorrect with the issued T4 and that it is absolutely correct.
