Tuition amount transfer to parent

Trying with no success to enter $5000 tuition amount (federal and provincial) that is being transferred from my child to me but my return continues to say $0 amount eligible.  I have filled out paper return for both my cild and me and had an accountant review it and it is correct.  Eligible to transfer max of $5000 but Turbo Tax program not allowing it.  How do I solve?  All Dependant credit are inputted correctly.

If your child meets all requirements set out by the CRA, you're eligible to receive tuition transfer amounts on your tax return. However, there are some important differences regarding how, and from whom, you can claim transferred tuition, and the process of claiming these amounts (and the amounts themselves) can vary depending on these differences. Follow the applicable steps below to enter transferred tuition into TurboTax.

How do I enter tuition transferred from my spouse/partner or child?

Please make sure that on Line 9 of Schedule 11 for 2022 of your daughters that it shows $5000, if not then you will not be able to claim the $5000.

Thank you for your reply.   I am using Turbo Tax Online version and get as far as Step 5 "Tranfer my Child's Tuition and Education Amounts, then select Continue" which I do but the next screen that shows is  "Climate Action Incentive".  Then I tried searching for "Tuition Transfer" screen which I get then select a parent to transfer tuition credit to and Continue.  Then I do get the correct "Transfer Tuition and Education (Federal)" screen but it says the $0 is the maximum available to transfer.  I have reviewed the CRA criteria and have done the paper version of the return for my child and it allows for $5,000 to transfer.  This has been confirmed by an accountant.  Makes no sense why the Turbo Tax screen shows $0 available to transfer for both Federal and Provincial.   I would appreciate any help to solve this?

I have phoned the support team more than once.  Get shared with supervisor but no one has been able to figure it out.  Last answer I got was that my child's income was too high which has no relevance to tuition credits transfer.  I had hoped that someone would take ownership of the issue and figure it out as I believe it is a website issue, many others have posted this issue in their comments as well.

The previous posts you are seeing were corrected last tax season. We have not been advised of any issues this year.

Hi,

Looks like the issue of the software for this  has not been fixed for this year.   It would not allow the current year’s tuition to be transferred.  After inputting all the correction numbers, it shows that the “maximum amount available to transfer is $0.”

Called Turbo Tax and the agent says the program is working fine - which clearly it is not if we are all having the same issue. I have asked for the issue to be escalated and investigated further.  This is terrible that we pay for a product and it doesn't work properly!

If you are full-time students- go to the top right and click on Find - type in Canada Workers Benefit- Once on that page put that you do not want to get the credit - as you are not entitled to it. Then continue to save it and keep going then please try again.

Thank you and I did what you instructed.  However, the amount for tuition transfer remains at $0.  In 2023, my son attend full time school for 6 months,  he also worked full time (and received T4)  and earned self-employed earnings.  He doesn’t need to use the tuition amount to reduce his tax owing as he is getting refunds.

I feel that we are running in circles telling the same stories, getting the same answers that do not solve the issue.  The problem seems to be related to the software's programmed calculation.  From readying number of other posts, I know I am not a stand alone case,  so this should be noticed and corrected by the TurboTax.  I have spoke to two Product  Specialists, spending hours on the phone,  going over step by step with them.  And in the end,  they don’t even know why the transfer amount reminds at $0.

To note, I have, in 2022, successfully transferred his tuition amount without any issue. Doing exactly the same steps as this year’s.

Hello,

What you suggested did not work.  I have already called in and spent a lot of time with the agent and she was to escalate the issue and someone was to call me back yesterday.  I still have not heard from anyone.  Please fix the issue and call me to advise it has been fixed.  It is a problem with the software. Terrible customer service.

Thank you,

Tracey

Just adding that I have the same issue. Only difference is I have 3 students I'm claiming for and only one of them actually allows the transfer. I removed all data for the 3 students and re-entered the 2 students transfers that didn't work and they still showed $0.00  of tuition transfer in the summery after I submitted. Then added the 3rd and it submitted OK again. Still short the amounts of the other 2. Each students claim is under $5000.
