Tuition transfer

On Schedule 11 on my child's return it indicates an amount that is available for transfer. However, when completing my return, the software indicates that the amount available to transfer is $0. How can I override this to put the available amount in line 32400 as instructed? Thank you!

I ultimately solved it. On the page to enter dependent info, there are boxes to indicate federal and provincial deductions that have to be totalled/summed up separately. Once I had the correct values there, the tuition transfer amount was correctly applied.

The student claims the Tuition and Education Amount they’re entitled to on their tax return. If there is an amount left over when they’ve used their tax credits to bring their income tax payable down to zero, they can transfer the leftover amount to a parent, grandparent, spouse or, common-law partner, or their parent or grandparent.

Please verify that all steps have been followed to transfer the tuition.

TurboTax Online:

  1. Select Find from the TurboTax menu
  2. Enter claims for dependants and select Go
  3. When prompted to review or claim any of these credits, choose Yes, then select Continue
  4. Select Enter Credit Info next to the name of the dependant who's transferring unused tuition amounts to you
  5. Select Transfer my Child's Tuition and Education Amounts, then select Continue
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to select Tuition Transfer, enter the amount(s) of the transfer(s), then select Continue

I found the place to enter the info. The problem is that even though my child's Schedule 11 indicates there is an amount available to transfer to another individual, entering that amount in TurboTax gives this error message "Maximum transferable amount for CHILD is $0.00". There is an amount owing on my tax return, therefore, I thought I should be able to have this reduced by including the transferable amount. Why the error message from TurboTax?

I have the same problem.  Just spent and hour online with support and they told me it was a tax specialist issue, not a program issue.  I have filed my son's taxes and his CRA account shows the assessment is complete and the amount to transfer.  Looking for answers before I start our taxes all over again with a different program.

I figured it out!  On the "Tell us about your Dependants" page which is a few pages back, make sure you enter the deduction information below "Do they qualify for a disability tax credit".  I left those fields blank because I assumed they were for people claiming a disability tax credit, but they are not part of that question.  I filled them in and boom...no longer saying zero!

I have a similar question where on Schedule 11 on my child's return it indicates that the amount available to transfer is $0. The turbo tax program automatically applied the full tuition amount towards my child's return, even though it was not needed as it resulted in about $3000 refund for my child.  The program automatically applied this when the T2202 amount was entered.  Without entering the T2202 info, my child's return resulted in about $2000 refund.  How can my child indicate to NOT using any of the tuition amount, and to transfer the full amount to a parent?  Steps were followed as outlined in the program, but nothing seems to work.  Does this only work if my child did not have any income, which he did earn via a co-op program through University?  Much appreciate any guidance or tips.  Thanks!

For your child: Lines 18 to 25—If you would like to transfer an amount to a family member, then complete lines 18 to 25. If you prefer to carry forward any unused amounts to a future year, then you need only to fill out lines 18, 19, 20, and 25.

When you file your taxes, you will be required to enter the information from your T2202 receipt to confirm your eligibility for your tuition tax credit. Check out this quick how-to video on filling out the T2202 form.

In Schedule 11 on my turbo tax program, lines 18 - 25 are auto filled by the program, and I am unable to override the amount of tuition my child wish to use... ie. none or 0.  Because of these being auto filled by the program, unused tuition amount available to transfer is always 0, so the amount that can be transferred or carried forward is not possible (since I can't type over the pre-filled amounts).   The only way this seems to work (auto filled by the turbo tax program) is if I DELETE my child's T4 info.   Thus, it appears no tuition amount can be transferred or carried forward if there is T4 income?  Is this the restriction?  Without applying the tuition amount to my child's return, a refund of about $2000 is the result.  Thus, it would make sense to transfer this to a parent to use instead if this is possible?  Much appreciate your guidance.  Thanks!

@Jayde2 The amount the student must use on your own tax return is equal to the amount of credit required to reduce the taxes you owe. The calculation is available on Schedule 11 from line 1 to 17.

If you have no amount transferred to line 18 to 25 in Schedule 11, you cannot override it. If the student transfers an amount to a designated individual (parents or else), they should only transfer the amount this person can use.

I the student has carried forward amount from previous years, this amount can't be transferred to anyone. It needs to be used by this student.

You can do some verifications to make sure all information are properly entered, starting with the T2202 slip.

Yes, all information are properly entered as per T2202 slip accordingly.  Then turbo tax auto filled lines 1-17 on Schedule 11 for my child based on this.  My child did specify transfer of unused amount to a parent in the next section before lines 18-25 as there is no need for my child to claim the tuition amount since a refund is pending  ie. no tax owing.

Lines 10 and 17 are the same amounts, which are auto filled into lines 18 and 19 respectively.  Thus line 20 (total unused amount) is always 0.  Same with lines 8 and 16, which are auto filled into lines 21 and 22 respectively.  Thus line 23 (Unused tuition amount available to transfer) is always 0.  Because of these, an amount to transfer cannot be specified.

Since the fields in Schedule 11 are auto filled, where override of these is not allowed, how can any amount be specified for transfer if line 20 and 23 are always 0?   It appears turbo tax is automatically applying all the tuition amounts to my child's tax return even though he does not have any tax owing, and NOT allowing any tuition amounts to be transferred.   Please advise how any tuition amount my child do NOT need can be specified and transferred in this case?

Would my child having T4 income restrict this in any way?   As advised, if I delete the T4 form, then the transfer of the tuition amounts works accordingly as per the steps advised.  Much appreciate your guidance.   Thanks!

The CRA website does indicate full or partial tuition amounts can be transferred or carried forward even with income, but the turbotax program does not seem to allow this since it automatically uses up all the tuition amounts for my child.  Not sure how to get around this without compromising ability to Netfile.  Much appreciate some advice or guidance on this. Thanks!

@Jayde2 You are right! even with income, a student should be able to transfer tuition from current year to a parent, up to $5000.
