There are two box 52s & two box 53s on the 2024 T3. One set is for before June 25, 2025, and one set is for after June 25, 2025. The sum of Total Capital Gains box 52 for before June 2024 and Total Capital Gains box 53 for after June 2024 have to equal to what is in box 21. And your Foreign Capital Gains can't be more than your Total Gains.
When you enter your Foreign Capital Gains, you have to make sure it goes in the box that matches the period - before or after June 25. If you put a Total Capital Gains amount in box 52 (before June 2024) but then put Foreign Capital Gains in Box 53 (after June 2024), you'll get an error because your Foreign Capital Gains for that period is higher than your Total Capital Gains for that period.
I have deleted all 3 of the downloaded T3 slips and re-entered all information. Note I am quite familiar about how this is done as I have been doing it for many years.
I am still getting the same error...that boxes 53 and 52 do not equal box 21...but they do! Note there is no foreign money involved.
Thank you

The error is coming up....not when I complete the T3, but at the end on the page "Some items need review"...there is an "error" "The sum of box 52 and box 53 must equal the total capital gain or loss in box 21 of your T3 slip. Please review your imported data". I have reviewed all and still received the error, so deleted everything on T3 and filled it out again.....but same error on the "Some items need review" page. There is something wrong with your software.
Please advise.
Thank you
Finally!!! There were 3 T3 slips downloaded from the CRA, but I received only one T3 (the three items were listed on the back of it, but totaled on the front.
So I again deleted the 3 T3's which had been downloaded and added ONE T3 with the information from the front of the T3.....and it worked! Note that all the figures still add up to the same as when there were 3 T3's, so I don't understand why there was a problem......it should be looked into.
Box 52 shows the capital gains from dispositions before June 25, 2024, while Box 53 reports the capital gains dispositions. So, It is linked to Schedule 3.
Schedule 3 is still locked by CRA and not finalized by CRA yet. Please refer to this link Why does TurboTax say my forms are locked or haven't been finalized?
We do not have any ETA on this yet but as soon a these forms gets finalize we will be updating them in TurboTax for an accurate calculations.
We appreciate your patience.
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
I am having similar problem. Wondering when this will be rectified , as it appears we will be unable to file as long as this is not fixed.
My CRA downloaded T3 files all have box 52 & 53 blank and my paper copy doesn't list these boxes. So TurboTax says the values don't add to the Capital Gains total. Where can I get this information?
I’m having the same issue and I don’t understand what the fix is. I imported the data from CRA, they in fact add up to the total they say is wrong but is right. What’s the fix? The fact that the error isn’t mine is exceedingly frustrating and the offers to pay to speak to someone are annoying and not particularly helpful since I’m pretty confident the error isn’t mine.
Please advise
Please refer to my reply on Sunday. My T3 info, originally downloaded from the CRA was split up into the three types of investments each with capital gains, etc.
As I stated, I deleted all 3 of the downloaded T3s and I went by the paper T3 which I had received, with amalgamated all of the figures on the front of the T3. It followed through to the end of checking all, and the original error was gone. I am waiting to file to see if anything else arises by the end of March. Note too the reply from the ADMINTurboTaxAntiqua Moderator on Sunday about CRA locking Schedule 3, which is another reason why I will not file immediately. I agree with you, it's a cash grab from "Turbo". these things should not be resolved by the "community", but by their IT dept.
I don't understand that fix. I only have a paper T3. It does not list box 52 or 53 nor have values.... there is a box 21 with a value...
Since 21 has a value and there are no 52 or 53 values, this data check will always fail. How do you resolve this?
I am having the same issue. I have only ever used the paper form. There are 2 box 53's and 2 box 52's on TT and only one on the actual slip. I have no idea if there is foreign income. I called in to TT and the agent said to just use the "totals" boxes not the "foreign income" ones, but i still have the message. What a pain. Even their own agents dont know what it is happening!
I am having the same issue. I have tried deleting the form and entering it manually but to no avail. The numbers are completely correct, boxes 52 and 53 are filling correctly and the sum of the two equals box 21. What is the problem?
I have checked my T3 numerous times and the information is entered correctly. However when I try to netfile, I am told boxes 52 and 53 need to equal box 21 (which they do) and if I don't correct this, I can't netfile.
When will this be fixed by TT? This has nothing to do with the CRA issues and all to do with the actual software itself. Is this a bug in your system?
The total value from boxes 52 & 53 do equal the value from box 21, yet TT is still flagging this as an issue. But as noted in another post a while back, the issue is only related when there is a decimal fraction value in the number. So if box 52 is 55.21 and box 53 is 66.32 and box 21 is 121.53 (which is the correct sum of boxes 52 & 53), TT still flag this as an error that needs to be fixed, which means you cannot file your taxes.
But if you change the values in the boxes and remove the decimal fraction value, the error does not show anymore. So if you round up 55.21 in box 52 to 56, 66.32 in box 53 to 67, and 1321.53 in box 21 to 123, then error is fixed.
Hence why the issue is related to the software in TT, as it seems for these particular boxes and this particular form, it has an issue with calculating decimal fraction values.
So I can round up the values up, fix the issues and seems like will be able to file. But is this how it is supposed to work? If I round up and file, and then have issues with the CRA over incorrect info, will TT be held responsible because their software could not properly handle data in their forms?
So what am I supposed to do now? Can you fix the issue or let us know?
Been using TT for many years, but maybe is time to try another software, even though all my forms were entered, and just need to file. But if you can't file, then what is the use of waiting?
Same Problem here as of March 19.
The information in the boxes is correct. I have deleted and re-entered the form. I have tried moving the capital gain to the "foreign" capital gains, gave me other errors AND still says they don't balance.
This is a problem with the TurboTax software. It needs to be fixed. It is preventing people from NetFile-ing.
I spoke to someone at Turbotax today and she told me they are aware of the problem and it is supposed to be fixed by late tomorrow. We will see...
I hope so. I did "correct" it by rounding off the numbers in 52/53 and 21. When I was doing that, I noticed that, on the summary showing all your T3's, that box 21 total is rounded... that is probably related to the problem.
I waited to file though because I don't want any alarms going off because my numbers are not exactly the same as what was submitted to the CRA...
There is a bug in the software creating this issue. I have tried it every way possible and the error message is the same. No foreign monies involved. Please raise a ticket and get this fixed!
It's late on March 20 and I'm still getting this error about 52+53 not equalling 21. First time with a T3 and am refiling because I didn't know that they get physically mailed out so late. Horrible experience so far 😛
When is turbo tax going to fix this. Some of us need to file. This year has been riddled with issues. These type of errors should not be happening.
T3 Form - Box 52 & 53 must equal box 21. I have two tax returns with the same issue. There is a value in box 21 & no values for box 52 & 53. (box 52 value before June 24 & box 53 value after June 24). Does this apply to the CRA's decision to not go ahead with the increase in Capital Gains tax? If this is the case, values in box 52 & 53 are complete waste of time and likely the reason they are not on the T3's I have received from the bank. When is this issue going to be resolved as I am not able to NetFile my returns.
