I have looked at this carefully, and I am pretty certain that the Downloaded T1 from TurboTax Online 2022, has incorrectly reversed the line-names for these two lines (see attached). Note: This section is also in a different order from the downloaded T1 last year in 2021.
It seems TurboTax is doing the "right thing" in the actual flowing calculations (I think), but if the line names were reversed in the downloaded T1, it would be correct.
Line 50 has a value, but it's not being injected into the indicated line 52.
Line 54 is getting that value instead.
This is a return where Ontario TOSI is not being claimed.
So I believe line 52 is actually the Ontario TOSI, and line 54 is actually the Ontario Non-refundable tax credit from line 50 and should be labelled as such.
And line 55 should say "Line 53 minus line 54".
That's what is was last year, in the downloaded 2021 T1.
I also checked a separate return I am preparing, and downloaded that T1 also, and it shows the same issue.
So this issue in the T1 is not TurboTax-account-specific.
Ok, I checked an ON428 downloaded from CRA this morning (see attached).
https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/tax-packages-years/general-income-tax-benefit-package/ontario/5006-c.html
So, while this part of my original post quoted below is incorrect - (they have switched the "plus" and "minus" orders and logic in 2023:
So I believe line 52 is actually the Ontario TOSI, and line 54 is actually the Ontario Non-refundable tax credit from line 50 and should be labelled as such.
And line 55 should say "Line 53minus line 54".
I believe this part of my post below is still correct, and TurboTax Online is injecting the incorrect values into Lines 52 (TOSI), and Line 54, in the downloaded T1 when no TOSI is claimed:
Line 50 has a value, but it's not being injected into the indicated line 52.
Line 54 is getting that value instead and vice versa.
To Summarize: In TurboTax Online's downloaded T1: It appears the contents of Line 54 should be where Line 52 is, and the contents of Line 52 should be where Line 54 is.
what if turbotax doesn't fix the error, then have to submit the wrong tax return?
> what if turbotax doesn't fix the error, then have to submit the wrong tax return?
My guess as a software developer, is given line 55 (the calculation) is correct in the PDF, the NETFILE may be correct, so you wouldn't have to file an adjustment. That is my guess... but let's see what TurboTax says.
My theory on what is happening (again a guess) is that that PDF "templating system" the TurboTax developers may be using to build this downloaded PDF, has the those 2 fields "rendered" in the switched locations for PDF output. But the filed identifiers under the hood, are still correct for a NETFILE.
Ultimately, I don't know.
But yes, that is my concern also. eg. 61510 if it is reported in a NETFILE, is being reported during as Ontario Tax on Split Income, and vice versa.
Thank you for your feedback- I will be sure to send this over to our proper team to take a look at and we will be back with a resolution for you as soon as possible.
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
Awesome, thank you so much Brenda. I am keeping an eye on this Support ticket daily.
I don't plan to NETFILE, or even print my T1 locally, until we know more.
I re-tested all my T1 downloads from TurboTax Online 2022 (both Self-Employed, and Deluxe) again this morning, March 26th, 2023.
Can you please make sure you update your software and know that the numbers should be good now. If not, can you please send us a picture of your screen so that we can assist further or your will need to call our phone support team who can view your screen and advise you. Contact us
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
Here's the update for anyone reading the post.
I called TurboTax Support 4 times over 4 weeks, through last week. They were unable to offer any timeline on the fix.
I did not have time to wait around to find out whether TurboTax would fix the error. I called CRA early last week and their recommendation was to not wait around, and to NETFILE regardless. And, if TurboTax has a platform wide error that propagated through the NETFILE - TurboTax would likely have to notify CRA of the issue and CRA would then have to notify the thousands of affected filers.
So, I NETFILED all of my household returns last week, even though the ON428 downloaded and printed PDF presented reversed values in lines 52 (Ontario Non-Refundable Tax Credits) and Line 54 (Ontario Tax on Split Income).
Upon NETFILE, I called CRA and we both checked on MyCRA. While we can both see that Line 50 aka. 61500 was reported correctly in the NETFILE (I have Ontario Non-Refundable Tax Credits) and it is viewable on MyCRA, Line 54 aka. 61510 in my case is _not visible on MyCRA and its absence _may be correct (as I have no Ontario Tax On Split Income).
The full confirmation that all my NETFILEs are correct, will be after the NOAs are processed next week, for all of the household returns filed.
Upon logging in just now to TurboTax Online, and accessing my already filed return and re-downloading the T1 PDF - as I suspected and mentioned earlier in this thread - after NETFILE - the T1 on TurboTax Online appears to be essentially static (which you'd expect) and continues to present the same reversed values - since I suspect it is exactly the same PDF stored in the DB for my user on the day I NETFILE'd. That makes sense to me, and I expected re-downloads of that PDF to continue to present incorrect reversed values in Lines 52 and 54 in that PDF ON428 after a NETFILE.
As for sharing my screen of a downloaded PDF with a TurboTax Support agent through the TurboTax video portal as suggested - the downloaded PDF is a loose file - it's not part of the TurboTax Online platform tab. We tried that already on my 1st support call. The TurboTax video share system is not capable of viewing anything other than the active browser tab containing the TurboTax platform UI.
As for sharing a screen grab, I already did in my first post in this thread. But it appears the TurboTax Community platform masks the image (presumably because the platform's OCR recognized it as part of a 'real' return) and not a blank portion of the CRA version I uploaded farther down in the thread. So that is not possible either.
Can you please confirm with me if the email that is associated with the Community is still valid and if yes- please answer with just a "YES".
Unfortunately this is still an issue and I just called support and had case number 15 19195832 opened for it. I had only seen the thread at https://turbotax.community.intuit.ca/community/troubleshooting/discussion/form-form-on428-part-c-line-52-and-54-ap[product key removed]tax-entered-line-50-number-on-line-54-but/00/2939780 before calling which didn't have a follow-up.
I think the root cause is that the line order changed since 2021 but Turbo Tax wasn't updated to reflect that. You can see the 2021 form online at https://www.canada.ca/content/dam/cra-arc/formspubs/pbg/5006-c/5006-c-21e.pdf
