Unrelated Dependant?

Hello, my wife and I took a minor (16yrs) into our care last year (March 2020).  They do not work or pay for any room or board.  Can they be claimed as a dependant?  Which relationship do I need to select from the drop down menu on turbo tax?

Thanks

We appreciate you choosing TurboTax,

You can claim adopted child as a dependent. Please read all the details provided bellow for further clarifications.

Who Qualifies as a Dependant?

An eligible dependant varies based on the credit or deduction you want to claim. Many different people can qualify as dependants, and someone who qualifies as a dependant for the purposes of one credit may not qualify for another dependant credit.

The most common dependant types are:

  • Your children and grandchildren (either biological, adopted or stepchildren)
  • Your parents and grandparents
  • Your brothers or sisters (including brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law)
  • Your nieces, nephews, aunts or uncles

To add this credit from your return in TurboTax Online

Note: The Find button is visible once you've completed the Introduction and Profile sections of your return. If you don't see it, go back to those sections and enter all your information.

1.  Select Find (the magnifying glass icon) from the TurboTax menu.

2.  Type Amount for an eligible dependant, and select Go. The Your children and other dependants page should appear.

3.  Select Enter Credit Info. The Claim Dependant Credits page should appear.

4.  If you haven’t already done so, check the box for Amount for an eligible dependant, then select Continue.

5.  Answer Yes to the question Do you wish to make the claim for the amount for an eligible dependant?, and select Continue.

6.  Repeat steps 3-5 for each of your dependants.

7.  When you’re done entering all of your dependants, select Done Entering Credits.
