Why do I need to pay taxes when our tax refund is green? (doing tax returns for spouse and myself, my number is red, her number is green, combined the number is green)

The way the CRA works it, is that they will not remove or add any amounts from one spouse to another. When doing a joint return it is still considered 2 individual returns, since they have to be filed separately. You will need to pay what you owe, and your spouse will get the refund. Therefore as a couple, once the amount has been paid, the difference is the amount on the top left "Tax Refund" that you see on TurboTax.
