I have many medical receipts this year, surgery and therapy sessions, all over 40km from my home. can I enter all in one entry or do i need to break out by session?

The program has a full length medical claim sheet available. You will need to list your individual trips, with name of doctor, date of appointment, reason for appointment, & distance travelled. If the trips are all to one city, use the same standard distance for all trips. The medical travel claim for Ontario for 2014 is 57.5 cents per km. The distance claimed should be reasonable & believable. DO NOT GET GREEDY! If you want to reduce the typing, you can enter the Doctor's name, reason, and then enter the dates in a list underneath. Then complete the calculation by multiplying the total number of trips to one Doctor times the distance per trip times 0.575 c/km, (Ontario). You do not need receipts. If there are a lot of such trips, CRA may ask for a letter from the doctor showing the appointment dates to confirm your claim, especially if you have never claimed medical receipts in previous tax years. Other medical receipts, prescriptions, glasses, hearing aids, mobility equipment & so forth will all have to entered separately. Prescriptions can all be added together as one amount. If you do not have a history of making medical claims before, the chances of CRA asking to see the receipts is very high. You should have copies of all of this material available beforehand just in case. The window to send this material to CRA, IF ASKED, is very short. Always make copies of any material that you send to CRA. If the surgery involved staying in hospital overnight, your trip claim is one trip to Hospital, (1/2 the distance) & one trip back home, (the remaining half distance). Little things like that will result in a disallowed claim. I am assuming that you owe sufficient taxes before the medical claim to absorb the claim itself. Medical bills are a non-refundable credit. No refund for the excess unclaimed amount & it cannot be carried over to next year. If your income is so low that you are non-taxable, there will be no claim for the medical bills. Check this first to avoid a whole lot of useless work. Sorry this is so complicated. Best of luck, B.
