North. Res. Ded.- How does TurboTax allow a higher earning spouse to claim both the basic and add. ded. while still allowing the lower earning spouse to claim travel?
My wife and I live together and both work as teachers in Zone A. We both qualify for the northern residents deduction and the medical and vacation travel deduction. My salary is twice hers because she is a half-time teacher and I am a full-time teacher. It is in our best interest to have me claim both the basic residency deduction, additional residency deduction, and travel deduction and have my wife only claim the travel deduction from her T4 (I know because I used to do this before I started using TurboTax). HOW DO I DO THIS IN TURBOTAX? When I toggle that she qualifies for the N.R.D., TurboTax prevents my wife from ONLY claiming the travel deductions and allowing me to claim both the basic and additional residency amounts. The only way it lets me do it legally is for both of us to claim the basic, but like I said before this is NOT in our best interest.
