How do I transfer my unused tuition credits to someone else?

Important: Tell the person you’re transferring your unused tuition amounts to what the amounts are so they can enter them on their tax return.

Note: If you want to claim tuition transferred to you from your spouse/common-law partner, child or grandchild, follow these instructions (click here: link).

 

Before you begin

  1. Enter your income information in TurboTax.
  2. Follow these instructions (click here: link) to claim your tuition fees in TurboTax.

TurboTax uses your income and tuition and education information to calculate the maximum amount you can transfer.

 

 

Next, enter how much of your tuition credit you want to transfer to someone else

 

Instructions for the online edition of TurboTax

1. Select the image of the magnifying glass (or Find) in the upper-right area of TurboTax.

2. Enter “students” in the Find window.

3. Select Students from the list of results, and then select Go.

The Your Student Profile step appears.

4. Select Transfer of tuition and education to a spouse, parent or grandparent, and then select Continue.

The T2202A, TL11 and Tuition Fees Paid - Summary step or T2202A, TL11, Relevé 8 and Tuition Fees Paid - Summary step appears.

5. Select Done with Tuition Fees.

The Transfer Tuition and Education (Federal) step appears. TurboTax displays the maximum amount you can transfer at the top of the step, based on the income and tuition and education information you entered.

6. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter the unused federal tuition amount you want to transfer.

7. Select Continue.

If you live a province that doesn’t offer a provincial tuition credit, the Student Summary step appears. You’re done entering the unused tuition amount you want to transfer.

If you live in a province that offers a provincial tuition credit, the Transfer Tuition and Education (Provincial) step or Transfer Tuition (Québec) step appears. TurboTax displays the maximum amount you can transfer at the top of the step, based on the income and tuition and education information you entered.

8. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter the unused provincial tuition amount you want to transfer (and who you’re transferring to, if TurboTax asks).

9. Select Continue.

You’re done entering the unused tuition amount you want to transfer.

 

 

Instructions for the CD/download edition of TurboTax

1. Select the image of the magnifying glass (or Find) in the upper-right area of TurboTax.

2. Enter “students” in the Find window.

3. Select Students from the list of results, and then select Go.

The Your student profile step appears.

4. Select Transfer of tuition and education to a spouse, parent or grandparent, and then select Continue.

The Let’s get you some tax breaks for going to school! step appears.

5. Select Done With Tuition.

The Transfer tuition (federal) step appears. TurboTax displays the maximum amount you can transfer at the top of the step, based on the income and tuition and education information you entered.

6. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter the unused federal tuition amount you want to transfer.

7. Follow the on-screen instructions to select the person you want to transfer the unused tuition amounts to.

8. Select Continue.

If you live a province that doesn’t offer a provincial tuition credit, the Student summary step appears. You’re done entering your tuition credit.

If you live in a province that offers a provincial tuition credit, the Transfer Tuition and Education (Provincial) step or Transfer Tuition (Québec) step appears. TurboTax displays the maximum amount you can transfer at the top of the step, based on the income and tuition and education information you entered.

9. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter the unused provincial tuition amount you want to transfer (and who you’re transferring to, if TurboTax asks).

10. Select Continue.

You’re done entering the unused tuition amount you want to transfer.
