How do I claim moving expenses in TurboTax?

You can claim eligible expenses if you moved more than 40 kilometres in order to be closer to work or school to:

  • work or run a business in a new location; or
  • study full-time at the post-secondary level at a college, university, or other educational institution.

You can only deduct moving expenses from your income from employment or academic awards (such as scholarships and bursaries) at your new place of work or school. Therefore, the moving expenses you claim cannot exceed your income at your new place of work or school. If you have amounts that you cannot claim because they exceed your income or awards, you can carry these amounts forward and claim them in a future year.
