Can I claim my parent's $10,000 health insurance premiums, paid as a condition of their SuperVisa status, having arrived in Canada in Dec. 2015?
My elderly, retired parents arrived in Canada, each on a Parental Super Visa, in December 2015 and are living with my spouse and I. Three questions: 1) As my parents are dependent on us for everything, (inc. housing, food, transportaion, health care etc) can I claim them on my 2015 Canadian Tax return, ? 2) We purchased the required emergency medical coverage for each of them. Can I claim half of the $10,000 spent on their premiums on my 2015 tax return as medical expenses with my spouse claiming the other half ? Or should I just claim the entire amount ? Can half be claimed in 2015 with the other half claimed on 2016's income tax return ? 3) At what point are they to file their own income tax returns ? SuperVisa is vaild for a total of 10 years, to be renewed every 2 years, meaning that they must leave Canada every 2 years to travel and then re-enter Canada. Thank you in advance.
