Where do I claim meal, lodging, and employment expenses as a transport employee?

First, enter your meal and lodging expenses in the Income > Employment Status > Transport Employee Expenses step of TurboTax. Then, if applicable, enter your employment expenses (such as vehicle and home office expenses) in the Income > Employment Expenses step.

 

First, enter your meal and lodging expenses:

Using online editions of TurboTax:

  1. From the top-right of your screen, select Find and type “transport” into the search field.
  2. Select Transport Employee Expenses from the options that appear, and then select Go.
  3. On the Information for a Transport Employee step, enter your period of employment in the space provided and select the method you’re using to enter your expenses. Then, select Continue.
  4. On the Trip Summary for Truck Drivers and Other Transport Employees step, select Enter New Short-haul Trip or Enter New Long-haul Trip, as required.
  5. Follow the instructions on your screen to enter information about your expenses. Then, select Continue.
  6. On the Trip Summary for Truck Drivers and Other Transport Employees step, select whether you need to enter another trip, or select Done with trips.
  7. On the Repayments step, enter the amount your employer has or will repay you for your meals and lodging, if applicable. Then, select Continue.

Using CD/download editions of TurboTax:

  1. From the top-right of your screen, select Find and type “transport” into the search field.
  2. Select Transport Employee Expenses from the options that appear, and then select Go.
  3. On the Information for a Transport Employee step, enter your period of employment in the space provided and select the method you’re using to enter your expenses. Then, select Continue.
  4. On the Trip Details for Short-haul Truck Drivers and Other Transport Employees step:
  • If you have short-haul trips to enter, enter your information in the space provided. Select More Trips if you have additional short-haul trips to enter.
  • If you have long-haul trips to enter, select Continue until you reach the Trip Details for Long-haul Truck Drivers step.

 

Next, enter your employment expenses (such as vehicle and home office expenses, if applicable.

  1. From the top-right of your screen, select Find and type “employment expenses” into the search field.
  2. Select Employment Expenses from the options that appear, and then select Go.
  3. On the Employment Profile step, select all the options that apply, and then select Continue.
  4. Follow the instructions on your screen to enter your employment expenses.

 

*If you don’t see the Find button, you may not have completed the Setting Up/Introduction step of your return. Continue through the Setting Up/Introduction step until the Find button appears.

 

Note: Do not enter the same expense in more than one place!
