I am pregnant and just put on bed rest. I am a stay at home mom. We have to hire a nanny so my husband can work. Can we claim the expense?

Great question!

There are provisions in the child care expenses rules that include your scenario. Because you are unable to care for your child & child care is required for your spouse to work, your child care costs can be claimed.

Usually, child care expenses must be claimed by the lower-earning spouse but because you are on bedrest, the higher-earning spouse will be allowed to claim the deduction if you are on bedrest for two weeks or more. Be sure to keep a note from your doctor ordering bedrest just in case CRA ever wants to see it.
