I purchased a hearing aid in 2018 but paid for it in monthly instalments that went into 2019. Do I claim the full amount or only the 2018 instalments?

You would only claim the amounts that were paid in 2018 on your 2018 income tax return.  You can claim the portion that is remaining on your 2019 income tax return.
