Why does Turbotax prompt you to enter Box 24 amounts on Line 232 if they are not valid deductions? Will this be rectified for 2017 returns?

Box 24 of the T4RIF will only show up as an "Other Deduction" on Line 232 of the tax return if you indicated you could claim an offsetting deduction for the amount.

It is a valid deduction if one of the following situations applies:

  • If the amount received relates to RRSP contributions you could not deduct from income, you may be able to claim an offsetting deduction on Line 232, 
  • or you received the amount due to the death of an RRIF Annuitant.
