What are Canada Training Credits, and how do I enter them into TurboTax?

The Canada Training Credit (CTC) is a refundable federal tax credit to help with training and tuition fees. To be eligible for the CTC, you must:

  • Be a Canadian resident no younger than 26 and no older than 65
  • Have income in the year between $10,000 and $165,430 for 2024. (The upper limit is indexed annually.)
  • Have a Training Credit Limit from the prior year’s CRA Notice of Assessment. For more information, see question #11 on this CRA webpage.

Each year, people who qualify can save up to $250. They can save up to $5,000 over their lifetime. Those wishing to use the CTC must attend and pay tuition to an institution that qualifies. This includes:

  • University, college, or another Canadian facility offering post-secondary courses.
  • Canadian schools offering occupational skill courses certified by the Ministry of Employment and Social Development.

To claim your CTC credit using TurboTax, choose your software edition and follow the steps.

  1. From the Tax home screen, enter student and select Students Profile.
  2. Enter student in the search bar, then choose Students from the list of results and select Go.
  3. If eligible, at the looks like you’re eligible to receive the Canada Training Credit screen, enter the Canada Training Limit amount from your last year’s CRA Notice of Assessment (NOA).
  4. At the based on what you’ve told us screen, you’ll see your available credit amount, and you’ll indicate whether you want to claim it.
  5. Once completed, you’ll see a Student Summary showing your claim amount.

Follow these steps while in Easy Step mode. If you want to claim the credit in Forms mode, use Schedule 11.

  1. Select the Find icon, enter student in the search bar, select Students and select Go.
  2. At the Your student profile for 2024 screen, select Tuition fees on receipt, T2202, or TL11, then continue.
  3. If your tuition isn't reported on a T2202 slip, enter the tuition fees in the applicable box. If your tuition is reported on a T2202 slip, select Enter T2202 and complete the tuition section of your return to find out if you're eligible.
  4. If eligible, at the you're eligible to receive the Canada Training Credit—let's see how much you qualify for screen:
    • Enter the Canada Training Limit amount from your last year’s CRA Notice of Assessment (NOA)
    • Indicate whether you want to claim the credit.
  5. At the Student summary screen, you’ll see your  claim amount.
