How do I claim the Ontario Jobs Training Tax Credit?

The Ontario Jobs Training Tax Credit (OJTTC) is a temporary credit for tax years 2021 and 2022 to help workers retrain, improve their skills, or prepare for a career shift. If you qualify for the credit, you can claim 50% of your eligible expenses on your personal income tax return, up to a maximum of $2,000. 

The eligibility requirements are the same as those for the federal Canada Training Credit. To claim the OJTTC, you must meet all of the following conditions:

  • Your Canada training credit limit for the year is more than zero. Find your limit on your latest notice of assessment or reassessment
  • You were an Ontario resident at the end of the year
  • You were between 26 and 65 years old at the end of the year
  • Fees were paid either to an eligible institution for courses you took during the year or to certain bodies for an occupational, trade, or professional exam
  • The fees are also eligible for the tuition tax credit

To claim this refundable credit in TurboTax, follow the steps below:

  1. Select Find and enter students.
  2. Select Students from the list of results, then select Go.
  3. On Your Student Profile, select the checkbox for Tuition fees on a receipt, T2202, or TL11, then select Continue.
  4. On the Let’s get you some tax breaks for going to school! screen, enter your fee details, then select Done with Tuition Fees.
  5. Select Done with Tuition Fees again.
  6. Enter your Canada training credit limit, then select Continue.
  7. Answer Yes to the question Do you want to claim the Canada Training Credit?, then select Continue.
  8. Your provincial credit amount appears next to Jobs Training Tax Credit on your Student Summary.
  1. Select Find and enter students.
  2. Select Students from the list of results, then select Go.
  3. On Your student profile, select the checkbox for Tuition fees on a receipt, T2202, or TL11, then select Continue.
  4. On the Let’s get you some tax breaks for going to school! screen:
    • If you have T2202 or TL11 slips, select Enter T2202 to enter them, then select Done with T2202 as you finish each screen.
    • If you don’t have any slips, enter your fee details in the provided box(es).
  5. Select Done With Tuition.
  6. Enter your Canada training credit limit, answer Yes to the question, then select Continue.
  7. To see your credit amount, select PROVINCIAL from the menu, then select Ontario, and then Provincial tax summary.
  8. Your provincial credit amount appears next to Ontario jobs training tax credit.
