How do I claim the Labour Mobility Deduction for tradespeople?

Starting with tax year 2022, the Labour Mobility Deduction for tradespeople (LMDT) is available to a tradesperson or apprentice employed in the construction of buildings at a temporary location in Canada.

To claim this deduction in TurboTax, follow these steps:

  1. Answer the initial Personal info interview questions if you haven't already. This unlocks the Tax home screen.
  2. From the Tax Home screen, under Add to your return, enter Employment in the search bar and select Employment Expenses.
  3. On the Employment Expenses screen, select Yes.
  4. On the Employment Expenses Profile screen, select I received T2200, then select Continue.
    • If the employer hasn't provided the form, the expense can't be claimed.
  5. On the [your name]: Employment Expenses Profile screen, check the box for Labour Mobility Deduction for an Eligible Tradesperson, answer the questions, and then select Continue.
  6. If you reside in Quebec, on the Employment Expense Profile For Québec Residents screen, select any applicable box and select Continue.
  7. On the Labour Mobility Deduction for an Eligible Tradesperson screen, enter the expense, income and carryforward info for the temporary work location.
  8. To view your claim, from the Tax Home screen, select View detailed summary. At the Detailed Tax Summary screen, the LMDT claim is included in the amount for Line 22900, Other employment expenses.
  1. Select Find and enter employment in the search field.
  2. Select Employment expenses, then select Go.
  3. On the Employment expenses screen, select Yes.
  4. On the Employment Expense Profile screen, select Labour mobility deduction for an eligible tradesperson, then select Continue.
  5. On the Labour Mobility Deduction for an Eligible Tradesperson screen, enter your amounts for expenses, previous year carryforward, and 2024 income from the the temporary work location.
  6. Select either Add another relocation and repeat the previous step, or Continue.
  7. On the Employment Expenses Summary screen, you’ll see your claim amount(s).
