How do I claim the Labour Mobility Deduction for tradespeople?
Starting with tax year 2022, the Labour Mobility Deduction for tradespeople (LMDT) is available to a tradesperson or apprentice employed in the construction of buildings at a temporary location in Canada.
To claim this deduction in TurboTax, follow these steps:
- Answer the initial Personal info interview questions if you haven't already. This unlocks 2024 tax return.
- From 2024 tax return, under Add to your return, enter Employment in the search bar and select Employment Expenses.
- At Employment Expenses, select Yes.
- At Employment Expenses Profile, select I received T2200, then select Continue.
- If the employer hasn't provided the form, the expense can't be claimed.
- At [your name]: Employment Expenses Profile, check the box for Labour Mobility Deduction for an Eligible Tradesperson, answer the questions, and then select Continue.
- If you live in Quebec, at Employment Expense Profile For Québec Residents, select any applicable box and select Continue.
- At Labour Mobility Deduction for an Eligible Tradesperson, enter the expense, income and carryforward info for the temporary work location.
- To view your claim, from 2024 tax return, select View detailed summary.
- At Detailed Tax Summary, the LMDT claim is included in the amount for Line 22900, Other employment expenses.
- Select Find and enter employment in the search field.
- Select Employment expenses, then select Go.
- At Employment expenses, select Yes.
- At Employment Expense Profile, select Labour mobility deduction for an eligible tradesperson, then select Continue.
- At Labour Mobility Deduction for an Eligible Tradesperson, enter your amounts for expenses, previous year carryforward, and 2024 income from the temporary work location.
- Select either Add another relocation and repeat the previous step, or Continue.
- At Employment Expenses Summary, you’ll see your claim amount(s).
