How do I claim unused RRSP contributions I made in previous years but didn't deduct?

by TurboTax Updated 1 week ago

Your unused RRSP contribution amount from previous years will be on your RRSP Deduction Limit Statement, found on your latest Notice of Assessment. When you use CRA’s Auto-Fill My Return, TurboTax automatically downloads the contribution amount (if applicable) into your tax return for you.

Note: Unused contributions are different from unused contribution room, which is the amount you're entitled to contribute and deduct, minus the amount that you actually deduct.

Select the applicable option for instructions on how to claim unused RRSP contributions.

  1. Select Find or the Search icon from the menu.
  2. In the search bar, enter RRSP profile. Select it from the list and then select Go.
  3. Select the checkbox for Have unused RRSP/PRPP contributions from prior years and Made RRSP/SPP contributions you wish to carry forward and deduct in a future year, then select Continue.
  4. .Select Continue until you reach Unused RRSP/PRPP Contributions.
    • If there's an amount displayed and the amount is correct, answer No to the question Do you want to change this amount?, then select Continue.
    • If the amount isn't correct, answer Yes to the question Do you want to change this amount?, and enter your amount before selecting Continue.
  5. On the RRSP Contribution Summary step, select Done With RRSPs.
  6. On the RRSP/PRPP and SPP Carry Forward step, TurboTax shows you the total value of available contributions and your deduction limit. To deduct from available contributions, enter the amount you want to deduct, then select Continue.
  1. Select Find from the menu.
  2. In the Find window, enter Registered. Select Registered Savings Plans Profile and then select Go.
  3. Select the checkbox for Have unused RRSP/PRPP contributions or unused Specified Pension Plan contributions from prior years and Made RRSP contributions you wish to carry forward and deduct in a future year, then select Continue.
  4. On the What’s your RRSP/PRPP deduction limit? step, enter your limit.
  5. Answer No to Is your RRSP/PRPP deduction limit for 20XX zero? and then select Continue.
    • If the answer is yes, enter Yes. You’ll have to wait until a tax year when your limit is greater than zero to deduct.
  6. On the Unused RRSP/PRPP and SPP contributions step, enter your unused RRSP/PRPP contributions and, if applicable, your undeducted SPP contributions, then select Continue.
  7. On the RRSP/PRPP carry forward step, enter the portion of your contributions that you want to carry forward and deduct in a future tax year, then select Continue.
