How do I add or remove the amount for an eligible dependant from my tax return?

Add credit in TurboTax Online

  • Either:

    • Enter your dependant info during the initial Personal info section of the TurboTax interview. If you’ve already passed that section and didn’t add the dependant info,

    • From 2025 tax return in the left menu select Personal info > Edit.

      • At Your personal info summary, for Dependants, select Add.

      • At Do you have dependants, select Yes and continue.

      • At Tell us about your dependants, enter the required info for your dependants. Then select Done adding dependants, then continue.

  • From 2025 tax return in the left menu, under Add to your return, enter dependant and select Claims for Dependants.

  • At Claims for Dependants, select Yes and continue.

  • At Your children and other dependants, select Enter Credit Info.

  • At Claim Dependant Credits for [Dependant], check the box for Amount for an eligible dependant, then continue.

  • At Amount for an Eligible Dependant, answer Yes to the question Do you wish to make the claim for the amount for an eligible dependant? and continue.

  • At Your children and other dependants, select either Enter Credit Info and enter another dependant until they’ve all been entered, or select Done Entering Credits.

Add credit in TurboTax Desktop

  • Select Find (or the magnifying glass icon) from the menu.

  • Enter claims for dependants, select it, and select Continue. 

  • At Claims for dependants, answer Yes to the question Would you like to review or claim any of these credits? then continue.

  • Select a dependant from the list, then select Enter Dependant Credits.

  • At Claim Dependant Credits, check the box for Amount for an eligible dependant, and then continue.

  • At Amount for an Eligible Dependant, answer Yes to the question Do you wish to make the claim for the amount for an eligible dependant? and make sure that their net income is zero. Then continue.

  • If there are additional dependants, complete the previous three steps as required. If not, select Done Entering Credits.

Remove credit in TurboTax Online

  • From 2025 tax return in the left menu, under Add to your return, enter dependant and select Claims for Dependants Intro.

  • At Claims for Dependants Credits, select Yes and continue.

  • At Your children and other dependants, select Enter Credit Info.

  • At Claim Dependant Credits for [Dependant], ensure the box for Amount for an eligible dependant is checked. Then continue.

  • At Amount for an Eligible Dependant, answer No to the question Do you wish to make the claim for the amount for an eligible dependant? and continue.

  • Repeat the No selection (the previous three steps) for any remaining dependants.

  • When you’re done with all dependants, select Done Entering Credits.

Remove credit in TurboTax Desktop

  • Select Find from the menu.

  • Enter Claims for dependents and select it. Then select Go.

  • At Claims for dependants, answer Yes to the question Would you like to review or claim any of these credits? then continue.

  • At Dependant credits, select a dependant from the list, then select Enter Dependant Credits.

  • Ensure the box for Amount for an eligible dependant is checked, then select Continue.

  • At Amount for an Eligible Dependant, answer No to the question Do you wish to make the claim for the amount for an eligible… then continue.

  • Repeat the previous three steps for any remaining dependants.

  • When you’re done removing all of your dependants, select Done Entering Credits.
