Can I claim both federal and provincial tuition and education amounts?

by TurboTax Updated 10 months ago

For residents of most provinces, you can claim both provincial and federal tuition amounts.

  • Manitoba
  • Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Nova Scotia
  • Northwest Territories
  • Nunavut
  • Prince Edward Island
  • Quebec
  • Ontario (as of 2017)
  • Saskatchewan (as of 2017)
  • Alberta: Eliminated the education and tuition tax credits for 2020 and later taxation years. Alberta credits earned prior to 2020 can still be claimed by Alberta residents. If you moved to Alberta after 2019, you can't claim any unused tuition and education credits from another province or territory. An individual who’s not a resident in Alberta on the last day of a taxation year ending after 2019 has no carry-forward of unused tuition and education amounts.
  • British Columbia: The education tax credit was discontinued in tax year 2019. Carry forward of unused amounts is available. The tuition tax credit wasn't impacted.
  • New Brunswick: The education tax credit was discontinued. The tuition tax credit has was reinstated for 2019 and later years. Tuition fees paid in 2017 and 2018 can be claimed on a 2019 tax return, or carried forward to a future year. Tuition fee tax credits from the prior year are non-transferable

Note:

  • All provinces and territories have eliminated the textbook amount.
  • If your province has discontinued tuition or education amounts, you're still able to carry forward and claim any unused amounts from previous years.
