What medical expenses can I claim?

by TurboTax Updated 1 week ago

You can claim expenses for various medical products and services, travel expenses for medical treatment, attendant care, expenses for moving to accessible housing, and even premiums you paid to private health services plans.

The tax credit available to you is the total of your eligible medical expenses for a specified 12-month period, minus the lesser of: 3% of your net income, and $2,635 (for 2024).

Eligible expenses: To quickly find out whether an expense is eligible, enter your expense in the filter items box using the CRA’s search tool. You can also view a list of common medical expenses and their eligibility.

You might need to provide supporting documents and satisfy some conditions to claim certain medical expenses. To find out if there are any requirements to claim a medical expense, view the CRA's Details of medical expenses webpage.

Your 12-month claim period for your medical expense claim doesn't have to be the calendar year. The last day of your chosen 12-month period must fall within the tax year of your return. You can claim all eligible medical expenses with dates falling within your chosen claim period.

You can claim your own medical expenses, those of your spouse/partner, and those of the following family members:

  • Your children, or your spouse/partner's children
  • Your (or your spouse/partner's) parents, grandparents, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, or nephews who depended on you for support and lived with you during the tax year, and who have been a Canadian resident during the tax year
