I am flying to Montreal to get medical tests and services done as I am unable to do it in my province. I read online I can claim meals, accommodation, and travel expenses for medical services.
1) I am wondering if I can claim the plane ticket expense as a "vehicle expense".
2) Also, am I only able to claim the expenses (meals, accommodation, travel) that lead up to the medical appointment? I am leaving on a Sunday with the appointment being on a Tuesday but have to stay in Montreal until the week after's Wednesday.
Yes, you may claim the plane ticket as a "travel expense" under medical expenses.
As per Canada Revenue Agency (CRA): Medical Expenses (Select travel expenses under On this page): you may claim travel expenses if you had travel at least 40km away from your home to get medical services. This may also include travelling outside Canada. To claim your flight ticket cost you must meet these three conditions:
*Substantially equivalent medical services were not available near your home
*You took a reasonably direct travelling route
* It is reasonable, under the circumstances, for you to have travelled to that place for those medical services
As for your 2nd question: Yes you are right, meals, accommodations and travel expense are the most appropriate expense you may claim for your situation. I would strongly recommend you to check the list of the most common medical expense you may claim provided by CRA, to check whether you can claim any other eligible expenses you have incurred.
