If you are an American citizen who lives in Canada, and you receive Social Security payments, you must report them on your income tax return.
To enter that in TurboTax Online, please follow these steps;
- Go to your Tax Return
- Select Find from the TurboTax menu
- Enter 'Foreign Income' in the Find window
- Click Enter New Foreign Income.
- On the Foreign Slip page, you will find the box 'U.S. social security benefits'
Please note that do not report your American Social Security or pension payments in U.S. dollars. Instead, convert them to Canadian dollars. Use the Bank of Canada exchange rate from the day you received the pension. If you received the pension on multiple days throughout the year, use the average annual rate published by the bank.
