Installing Turbotax Download-CefSharpe.BrowserSubProcess

Hello,

While installing Turbotax, a message pops up saying "Windows Defender Firewall has blocked some features of this app.  Name:  CefSharpe.BrowserSubProcess".

Is this required to use Turbotax 2024?  Is it safe or okay to choose "Allow CefSharpe.BrowerSubProcess to communicate on private networks, such as my home or work network"?

If this is not recommended, how can we uninstall or delete the CefSharpe.BrowerSubProcess?

Thank you.

The CefSharpe.BrowserSubProcess is part of a system that TurboTax (and other applications) use to allow the software to connect to the internet. You should allow it, as TurboTax needs to connect to the internet to activate, download updates, NETFILE and for other features.

Thank you, TurboTaxSusan.

Has CefSharpe.BrowserSubProcess always been used by TurboTax?  I have used TurboTax for many years, and this is the first time the question came up while downloading the tax software.  The only difference I can think of is that in prior years, I bought the CD or digital download software from a store, while this time, I bought it directly from Intuit.ca.  I never came across the CefSharpe.BrowserSubProcess question until this year, in all my years downloading the Turbotax software purchased from stores.

Can you also confirm if each purchase of Turbotax software allows me to download it in 3 computers?  For example, if I buy a new laptop, can I download Turbotax 2024 on my new laptop using the same license code, if I have only downloaded it once before (on my old current desktop)?  Thank you again.

Yes, We've been having using CefSharp.BrowserSubprocess. A tool that allows you to embed chrome-lite browser functions into something, Usually, this tool is required in a specific program or device installed on your PC, you might have not experience this before as you have used a CD in the past an d it also depends on your computer settings.

You can use your TurboTax license code with one account and can Install up to 3 devices. Yes, you can install it on anew laptop using the same license code. If you want to install TurboTax Desktop on a second computer, you would need to login using the same account where you originally used the code. Then, when you login, the code will already be there. You would just have to select it to continue.

It's more likely to be a change in Windows Firewall due to updates, than a change in TurboTax.

I got the popup about this Browser Subprocess (that Windows is flagging it ) and since I didn't know what it was and had never got this in my previous installs, I said 'Don't allow'. Now I see that Intuit  recommends that I allow it. (It would have been nice to have been warned in advance.)

How do I now change to allow it?

@gottesmany2k were you able to install without it? If yes, then you should be good.

Hello,

When installing my 2025 Turbotax Digital Download version software to my laptop, I saw the "Do you want to allow public and private networks to access this app?" question regarding CefSharp.BrowserSubProcess.  It asked me to choose between "Allow" and "Cancel", and I hit "Cancel" (before I read the messages above).

1.  According to TurbotaxAntiqua's response to this question on March 16, 2025, as long as I was able to download the program to my laptop, it seems I should be okay.  Can you please confirm that this is still correct, and that clicking "Cancel" instead of "Allow" will not affect other functions like updating TurboTax or using Netfile?

2.  If I need to "Allow", how do I go about doing this now that I have installed the program into my laptop?

3.  If I have to uninstall and reinstall the program:

   (a)  Will the "Allow" and "Cancel" options show up again?

   (b)  Will this count as the 2nd of 3 computers that I can download the program for each license key (or would it still count as the 1st one)?

Thank you!

@JustAsking1 It should be fine. As long as the TurboTax build is up-to-date.

I've attached a screenshot for reference below. To check that information, you can go to Help > About TurboTax from the top panel.

You don’t need to start over and give this a try. You can manually whitelist the program through your Windows settings:

  • Click the Start menu and type "Allow an app through Windows Firewall" and hit Enter.
  • Click the Change settings button (you may need Admin permission).
  • Look for TurboTax 2025 or CefSharp.BrowserSubprocess in the list.
  • Ensure the checkboxes for both Private and Public are checked.
  • If you don't see it, click Allow another app..., browse to your TurboTax installation folder (usually in C:\Program Files (x86)\TurboTax), and select the executable file.
