If you state that your spouse/partner is dependent on you because of an impairment in mental or physical functions, TurboTax automatically claims the Canada Caregiver Credit for them. The amount you're entitled to depends on your particular circumstances, your spouse's or partner's net income and whether they're claiming other credits as well.
TurboTax Online
If you're preparing your and your spouse's or partner's returns together:
- Select Find (or the magnifying glass icon) from the TurboTax menu.
- In the Find window, type Personal Tax.
- Select Personal Tax Profile for your spouse/partner from the options that appear, then select Go. The Your Tax Profile Summary step appears.
- In the Other credits & deductions section, select Edit. The <Name>, what happened for you in 2021? step for your spouse/partner appears.
- Continue where it asks your partner Did you have a mental or physical impairment?, then select Yes.
- From the options that appear, select Canada Caregiver Amount: I am dependent on <Name> because of an impairment.
- Then, select Continue.
If you're preparing your return separately from your spouse's/partner's return:
- Select Find (or the magnifying glass icon) from the TurboTax menu.
- In the Find window, type Information.
- Select Information About Your Spouse or Common-Law Partner from the options that appear, then select Go. The Now, let's get <Name's> information step for your spouse/partner appears
- Select Continue. The Tell us more about <Name> step for your spouse/partner appears
- Follow the instructions below for the version you're using:
- TurboTax 2021, 2020, 2019: Answer the question "Was <Name>'s net income for 20xx zero?" If the answer is no, complete the Net income field that appears
- TurboTax 2018 and 2017: Answer the question "Was <Name>'s net income for 20xx zero?" If the answer is no, complete the Net income field that appears. TurboTax uses this information to calculate how much of the CCC you can claim
- Select Yes where it says Canada Caregiver Amount: Is <Name> dependent on you because of a mental or physical impairment? Fill out the rest of the questionnaire if needed, and select Continue.
TurboTax Online Free Edition
If you're preparing your and your spouse's/partner's returns together:
- Select My Info, then select Other Questions from the navigation menu on the TurboTax 2020 menu (in TurboTax 2017, the menu is called Setting Up). The Other questions step appears.
- Where it asks your spouse/partner Did you have a mental or physical impairment?, select Yes.
- Select the box for Canada Caregiver Amount: I am dependent on <Name> because of an impairment.
- Select Continue.
If you're preparing your return separately from your spouse's/partner's return:
- From the navigation menu, select My Info, then select Additional information about <Name>, where <Name>is your spouse's/partner's name. The Tell us more about <Name> step for your spouse/partner appears
- TurboTax 2021, 2020, 2019 and 2018: The navigation menu is located on the left-hand side
- TurboTax 2017: The navigation menu is across the top, and the option is called Setting Up
- Answer the question Was <Name>'s net income for 20xx zero? If the answer is no, then complete the Net income field that appears.
TurboTax uses this information to calculate how much of the CCC you can claim.
- Select Yes where it asks Canada Caregiver Amount: Is <Name> dependent on you because of a mental or physical impairment? (Here, <Name> is your spouse's/partner's name) and fill out the rest of the questionnaire if needed, then select Continue and follow the prompts.
TurboTax CD/Download
If you're preparing your and your spouse's/partner's returns together:
- Select Introduction from the menu, then select Personal Info. The Personal information step appears.
- Follow the instructions to enter your and your spouse's/partner's information, then select Continue. The Information for <Name> (your name) step appears.
- Select Yes where it says Canada Caregiver Amount is <Name> dependent on you because of a mental or physical impairment? (Here, <Name> refers to your spouse/partner).
- Select Continue.
If you're preparing your return separately from your spouse's/partner's return:
- Select Find (or the magnifying glass icon) from the TurboTax menu.
- In the Find window, type Information.
- Select Information about your spouse or common-law partner from the options that appear, then select Go. The Information about your spouse or common-law partner step appears.
- Follow the instructions on your screen to enter information about your spouse/partner.
- Enter your spouse's/partner's net income where it says Their net income for 20xx
- Select Yes where it says Canada Caregiver Amount Is your spouse/partner dependent on you because of a mental or physical impairment.
- Select Continue.
