Licence code associated with another account

I have always shared a licence code with my dad, we do not live in the same house and we always use way fewer than the 8 returns that come with the standard version.  This year, for the first time, when I went to active my TurboTax with the license code I am getting error message 608 "This license code is already linked to another account".

I thought you could use one licence code on multiple computers.  Do I have to log in with my dad's account?  Will that affect me when I go to submit my return to the CRA if I am logged in with his account?

Thanks.

TurboTax Desktop for TY24 will have 1 account per license code. As of this tax season, you need to log into your TurboTax account or create one in order to use your software. This will help our customers, as it now saves your license code to your TurboTax account. Yes, you can download it on 3 computers using your TurboTax account associated with your license code. It makes the process much easier, as when you are logged into your account when downloading on a new computer, the license code will already be there for you to click on.

You can still complete 8 returns as previously and NetFile them once NetFile is opened. Nothing has changed concerning NetFile.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

My father recently purchased a standard TurboTax, when I go to enter in the Licence code and I keep getting Error 608. I don't understand why I'm getting this error, I have used this program for many years and have never encountered this problem. How do I go about getting this resolved?

I am getting error code 608. My father loaded turbotax on his computer with his email. When I downloaded it on my computer, it says that the licence number is already in use. I tried putting in his email but the verification code that he gets in his email does not work when I enter it. We have always shared but have never had problems like this. Please help.  I already called the help desk and it didn't help

You need to login with the same username & password that was entered when the Licence was first used. Then, if there are any activations left, the code will appear on screen for you to select.

Are you able to login to the account here?: https://accounts.intuit.com/

Doesn't this requirement mean that everyone will be able to see all associated tax returns with this license code??

i just spent an hour trying to get support on this only to find out the only option is to login with the acct associated with the license key who downloaded it first. Which means your tax returns are not private - anyone you share the license with will see ALL the tax returns! Ridiculous!! I have bought turbotax for countless years and will NEVER buy it again!!! In this day and age of cyber security it's outrageous that our personal information will not be secured. You say a license can be downloaded on 3 computers but you better be really close to those people because they can see your tax returns!!! This was NOT disclosed up front when purchasing it this year.

When using TurboTax Desktop, yes, you can download on up to 3 computers, and yes, the LC is attached to the owner's account. When you go to download the software on a second computer, you will sign into the accountholder's account—that is a security put in place. Note that if you are downloading your software to a second or third computer, the information from your tax return that you completed on a separate computer will not be visible to you, unless you send that tax file to that other computer. For example, if you purchased a new computer, you would need to download your software to the new computer and then take the files saved on your old computer and transfer them to your new computer so that you have access to those tax files.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

I have another issue on same message.

I have 3 email address used in past for turbotax.  I recently purchased TT and forgot which email address I registered new software.  No I am trying to install new software on another computer and tried with all three email address and software does not let me activate.  How do I find which email address I have registered for my current TT 2024 software?

"This will help our customers, as it now saves your license code to your TurboTax account."

"It makes the process much easier, as when you are logged into your account when downloading on a new computer, the license code will already be there for you to click on"

lol - this is complete BS. Don't act like this is a consumer-friendly change. How does this "feature" make my life easier?

Before all I had to do was enter a code and I was good to go. Now I have to coordinate with another person, have them provide me with their password and 2FA code so I can log into THEIR account to enter the code?

This isn't just inconvenient - it's straight up a security and privacy risk.

Why do we need to be sharing sensitive passwords and codes with each other?

Why do I have to file my personal taxes under someone else's account for them to possibly have access to?

And why are we all finding out about this change only AFTER we've purchased the software and go to use it?

Your website makes no mention of this:

This has never been an issue in the 10+ years my family has been using TurboTax.

If you want to make these kinds of anti-consumer changes, fine, it's your product - but acting like this is in the best interest of your loyal customers is just straight up insulting.

This has all the makings of  Class Action Lawsuit

Your product has existed unchanged for 20 years - the License Code worked for 8 accounts across 3 computers;  family members could purchase and share.  Now I need to steal my mother's identity to use the same product in the same manner?

And why is the online version 30 bucks per person when the desktop version is 40 bucks for 8 people?

Everything about your business model feels like a scam that you can only get away with before INTUIT spends millions of dollars lobbying the government to make tax filing difficult.

Since I am now obligated to purchase my own copy of tax software in order to maintain the privacy and security of my family's financial information, I will be sure to use another company going forward

@Target_Dad The desktop version can be downloaded on three different devices, but the online version can only be connected to a single account.

We value your input and will forward it to the relevant department.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

Hi,

We used to share our turbo tax with family members in different households. we could do this using our own login info. it appears to have changed now? we need to all use the same login info? it seems like all privacy will be lost if we can all see each others returns?

This doesn't seem like a positive change

Thanks,

@kg2695 Similar to the previous year, the TurboTax Online code can only be linked to one account and cannot be applied to more than one account.

Yes, everyone will have access to each other's return and personal data if you share the login credentials.

Are you guys kidding me with this change?  Every year I buy the Home and Business version to do my taxes for my small business and split it with my brother who does his simple personal taxes.

This year because he installed his software first I need to use HIS login info just to install the **bleep** software???

Please fix this.  This is completely anti-consumer and if not fixed I will not be purchasing ever again.  Absolute garbage.

What an absolutely terrible change that goes against consumer accessibility. I will be submitting a complaint on the grounds of unfair and deceptive business practices. I encourage everyone else to do the same.

@daxproduck We understand your concern and have passed on your feedback to the relevant team.

The association of the license code with the Intuit account has several advantages, including making it easier for you to keep track of the various purchases/installations that have been made and an easy access to your license code in a situation where you need it.

Thank you,

I agree 100%. This requirement to sign in using the same username for multiple computers is ridiculous. And an invasion of privacy. I have used turbotax for many years. I WILL NOT BUY TURBO TAX AGAIN. You just lost another loyal client.
