How do I claim home office expenses if I’m self-employed?
To claim home office expenses for a business, your office must be one of the following:
- Your main place of business, or
- Used only to earn income and regularly meet clients
Select your product and follow the steps to claim your expenses in TurboTax.
- Answer all the initial interview questions to get to Your 2024 tax return screen, if you haven't already.
- Under Add to your return, enter self and select Self-employment activities.
- At the Your Self-Employment or Business Summary screen, select Enter New Business.
- Complete the interview screens until you arrive at the Do you use your home address for your (business) work? screen and select Yes.
- Continue completing the interview screens, until arriving at the Select the types of expenses you have screen.
- Under Home office, select Add.
- At the Here’s your (business) info screen, under Home office, select Start.
- At the Home office expenses screen:
- Under Did you use part of your home for work? select Yes.
- Under Was this home office or workspace used for work only and nothing else? select Yes or No, depending on your situation.
- At the How much of your home did you use for work? screen, enter the required info.
- At the Tell us about your home expenses screen, enter all of your applicable home office expense info.
- At the Here’s your (business) info screen, you’ll see your total claim for home office expenses.
- Answer all the initial interview questions if you haven't already.
- Select the Find icon and search for Business and select Businesses.
- Proceed through all of the income and expense screens providing the required info. until you arrive at the T2125 Business-Use-of-Home screen, and select Yes.
- At the T2125 Home Expenses screen, enter the required expense info.
- At the Portion of your home used for your business screen, enter your info about the workspace and the home overall.
- At the T2125 Business Summary screen, you’ll see the Business Statement with Business-use-of-home expenses.
- Enter your business info on T2125 – Business Statement and Continue.
