What self-employed travel expenses can I claim?
by TurboTax• Updated 1 week ago
If you're self-employed, you can claim reasonable travel expenses from yourself or your employees, such as:
- Business event ticket
- Travel fare
- Accommodation
- Parking
- Public transit
- Meals and entertainment
- Generally, your deduction for meal and entertainment expenses is limited to 50% of the actual cost. You can claim food, drink, and entertainment expenses separately from the fare for your plane, train, or bus travel if those costs weren’t included in the ticket price.
You can claim the cost of attending up to two work-related conventions a year.
Sometimes convention fees include the cost of food, drinks, or entertainment. If these amounts aren't shown separately on your bill, subtract $50 from the total convention fee for each day the organizer provides food, drinks, or entertainment.
You can deduct this daily $50 amount as a meal and entertainment expense instead, but keep in mind that a 50% limit will apply.
Follow these steps to claim these expenses in TurboTax.
