Do I still claim my child as a dependent, she lived with me for all of 2019 and most of 2020, but has been in foster care since November of 2020. Thanks.

Thank you for your question. Yes, you can claim your daughter as an eligible dependent for the part of 2020 she lived with you. Because as per CRA, these are the required to claim an eligible dependent:

  • You did not have a spouse or common-law partner or, if you did, you were not living with, supporting, or being supported by that person
  • You supported the dependant in 2020
  • You lived with the dependant (in most cases in Canada) in a home you maintained. You cannot claim this amount for a person who was only visiting you.
